2011-2012 NHL Thread

The devils are on the verge of bankruptcy and you think they may deal for a player who is demanding over $7 million per year.

Having two all-star left-wingers isn't really a bad problem to have:

Parise-Elias-x
Kovalchuk-Zajac-x

A guy like Josefson will probably cover for Zajac while he's out with an injury. And they've got some young guys who will fight for the right wing spots, or a guy like Zubrus or Clarkson maybe. Both left wingers will still get plenty of ice-time with Kovalchuk playing the point on the powerplay.

Personally, I don't think it's a massive problem, but when you invest 100 million in a guy, he's going to have some pull on what he wants to do and where he wants to play. To me, it just doesn't seem ideal to pay two guys big money only to have one of them on the second line and it's not how I would do business. Frankly, I don't care too much, as I hope the Devils have as many internal problems as they can.

The Islanders made Mark Streit their captain, thus, also making him the first ever Swiss-born captain of an NHL team, in the process.

Just had a quick look and haven't seen it posted, so....

10 games for Jody Shelley for the hit on Boyce - 5 pre-season, 5 regular season.

More of a number than I thought but if you look at the fact 5 are pre-season what does this really equate to?

Don't they get paid from the start of training camp now?

Like the Shelley suspension...but don't call it 10 games.

For a lot of NHL vets, a suspension for pre-season games is like your wife banning you from watching The View with her.

Looks like some players (such as the Leafs' Dion Phaneuf) are going to have to initiate a "learning curve" to familiarize themselves with the new hockey hit rules.....

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Brendan-Shanahan-and-the-NHL-8217-s-communicati;_ylt=Atw7CUnvn5LYTGfWpb2JNyZ7vLYF?urn=nhl-wp13120

TORONTO ? Dion Phaneuf disagreed with the call. This was nothing new. When your name is a verb synonymous for big hits ? 'You've been Phaneuf'd' ? there are going to be times when you feel the referee mistakenly whistled a clean hit for being something illegal, like when Phaneuf steamrolled Ottawa's Tim Conboy in the Toronto Maple Leafs' preseason home opener and was called for elbowing.

"I was talking with the refs and it's going to be a learning curve for all of us. One guy said he didn't think it was [illegal], which is why he didn't call it. The other guy thought the elbow was there. I wasn't targeting his head," said Phaneuf.

"You can't take contact out of our game," said Phaneuf, who watched the video on Monday morning before the Leafs' game against the Ottawa Senators. "It's part of our game. I finished my check, I think he leaned into it a bit. It's not 'he's right, he's wrong'; it's like the ref said: 'It's a learning curve for both of us.'"

"Illegal" is a shoulder to the skull without a body check. "Legal" is a body check in which the shoulder makes contact with the head..

Like Phaneuf said: These guys simply don't know what's legal or what's illegal any more. They don't respect some of these rules changes because they see it as an attempt to take hitting out of the game. Fans and media latch onto these incidents, at times in lieu of everything else on the ice, and obsess over their inconsistencies.

It all comes back to communication between the NHL and these parties on matters of player safety. Colin Campbell was terrible at it...

Shanahan was hired as someone a bit closer to the current game and as a new voice for the justice system.

...can Shanahan keep things consistent? How can he draw deep lines in the sand about the legality of hits?

Through constant education.

The biggest change under Shanahan's command will be the release of video to explain his rulings to players, fans and the news media.

"In an effort to be very communicative and to educate, we are going to be very transparent," he said. "I think it's important for all of our players to see all of the decisions being made and why."
Shanahan said it's crucial that sportswriters and broadcasters understand his decisions because they are a link to fans.

"It's important that the color analyst in Florida gets it right because fans will go to bed trusting in what he says," Shanahan said. "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I do believe that professionals want to get it right. And I am going to make as much information available as possible."

I'm loving the video explanations. Really helpful.

So Minnesota's Brad Staubitz gets suspended today for the rest of the pre-season and three regular season games for an "illegal check". I understand that Shanny is trying to set a precedent here, but at what point does it start getting ridiculous? I mean, I can't ever recall so many suspensions so quick? Is it the change in the rules? What are some opinions out there?

It's a combination of the rule change, Shanny not being Colin Campbell, and a real and concerted effort to crack down on dangerous hits to the head and from behind. Shanny's saying in a loud and clear manner that these hits will not be tolerated and that they have no place in the game anymore.

Much like the "called way too many obstruction calls" coming out of the lockout, it was meant to weed bad habits out of the game.  If you punish guys, it will have an effect.  Hopefully it doesn't wind up like the interference calls from the refs where they still "call it all the time" when really they only call it when they feel like it after letting considerably worse offenses off.

Here's to hoping that players actually learn the consequences as well.
