2011-2012 NHL Thread

Just curious, but anyone know where I can find stats for each Teams' average age?  i.e  who the youngest team is vs. who is the oldest?  And perhaps a breakdown of the players ages.

coachrw63: Impressive Torts! U just set a new presser record at 16 secs. I'm going to break that record!

Haha... Good for RW.

That's just about the first time that Ron Wilson has sounded likeable.

I think straight-up team-wide average age is useless as a metric.  If your back-up goaltender is 38 or your 4th line is filled with 35+ veterens it skews the average.

If what you are after is future team potential then I think you'd like to at least ask what's the median age of the top-6 forwards?  What is the median age of the top-4 D?  Perhaps better, to get account of how goal-scoring might improve, consider:

player 1:  age 26, goals 50
player 2: age 24, goals 30
player 3: age 20, goals 20

find a weighted average:

26*.5  + 24*.3  +  20*.2

or weight perhaps by icetime.

nhlnumbers.com has that stuff in their team comparison section.

I don't know about that either if only because a lot of very, very good players do break in on the 3rd or 4th lines.

That aside I agree on the average age problem. To use an extreme example a team of ten 40 year olds and ten 20 year olds is not in the same boat as a team of twenty 30 year olds.

Young Lidstrom idolized Salming
Wing records 1,500th game

The above is just a fyi for Leafs fans.

And I've always admired Lidstrom and don't mean any knock on his abilities with what I'm about to say.

I went to look at Lidstrom's milestones:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/careerstats.htm?fetchKey=20122ALLDAHALL&sort=goals&viewName=careerLeadersAllSeasons

I noticed he's 9th all time in dman goal scoring, 15 goals behind Bobby Orr.

Then I noticed Orr scored 15 more goals in 657 games than Lidstrom has in 1500 games. It struck me as mind numbing disparity. Of the 7 dmen who scored more goals, they all played twice as many games or more than Orr.

It's stuff like this that makes one realize just how good Orr was...

I wish I was old enough to see him play. It would probably serve to separate the very small gap I have between he and Lidstrom as the best ever.

Seems the Devils are putting Parise back at center... He will center Kovalchuk and Palmieri for now. He was drafted as a center so this could be interesting. Or, it could fail like Kessel's brief time there so we'll see.

Found this funny:

Columbus is winning 3-1 over Detroit in the 3rd.

So what's wrong with Detroit?  ;)  I'm assuming that the Leafs losing to Boston/Philly is equivalently bad to Detroit being blown out by Washington and losing to Columbus (if it happens).  Discuss with seriousness.

The hockey world abuzz with a Bruins PC announced last night for tonight... What's the deal-e-o?

When was this PC supposed to be held? I'm looking on the Bruins website and TSN's and not seeing anything coming out of Boston.

Turns out, it wasn't a press conference, but, rather, a media availability day.

A what? How lame. Must be a pretty easy gig for reporters covering the Bruins.

Basically a conference call for reporters to ask the GM whatever might be on their mind about the team. Pretty standard, lame stuff.

But why shroud it in secrecy? I mean tons of bloggers, etc had no what was going on and not one reporter revealed in advance they were told it was just a simple Q&A. I don't know... Seems a little bizarre to me.

There was no shroud of secrecy. Someone passed along misinterpreted information, and the bloggers and such that don't releases from the team's media took the ball and ran with it.
