2012/2013 realignment

it's already bad enough when weaker teams from one conference get in while stronger teams in the other are eliminated ...why would they think it's best to magnify that problem?

I don't see why the florida teams are in the leafs division vs. Pitt and Philly.

Are you complaining? Would you really want the Leafs in a conference with those two and Boston right now? They are arguably the three best teams in the league.

League source "don't get caught up in two confereces having 7 vs two having 8 teams...NHL may expand to 32 teams and all 4 will have 8 #NHL

Just what the NHL needs, more teams.

Id rather them fold 2 teams and have 7 teams per conference.

100% agreement here. Fold two teams.

I think the Flyers-Rangers-Pens conference gets by far the best deal in terms of travel.

I think they are trying to attract the Snowbirds.

I agree 100%.  28 teams.  Lose only 2 home games revenue but also rid NHL teams 2 away games expenses.

The league should look at 4 locations of Quebec City, Southern Ontario, Kansas City and Las Vegas to see each cities viability to maintain a hockey market.

Then the NHL atleast look at Carolina, NYI, New Jersey Devils, Phoenix, Florida, Columbus and Tampa Bay and see if all can survive.

The low revenue teams are going to have more trouble next year with the cap floor again...especially with Winnipeg selling out every game and making money after Atlanta losing money causing the league revenue average to go down.

I'm just wondering why.

Those are the teams that should go.  Don't need 2 teams in Florida; the Coyotes are probably playing their last season in Glendale; Columbus, well, really a hockey market?

If the Coyotes could re-locate to Quebec City, while the Blue Jackets and Panthers could form a pool of plalyers to be picked for a new team in Southern Ontario, if that is possible, or something thereof.

I like this but I'm curious... Why Tampa Bay and Florida and not (say) Carolina and Washington in our conference?... It would be slightly better for travel, you know?

Some problems still linger...

Under this format in 2006-07, the Leafs would have made the playoffs. As someone pointed out above, the 95 point Kings would have missed the playoffs last year. There is a team or two who would miss the playoffs while a team with a few points less gets in nearly every year since the lockout. I have mixed feelings about that - some if it offset by the unbalanced schedule they played and a leaning to a wildcard type system.

It's probably a good thing for the league overall or they wouldn't have voted for it. Their overall travel costs are probably going to go up though while some travel costs in the West may go down. It's not a great deal for the Leafs in my opinion.

It may not be but the players and staff on those Florida trips might not complain much... It probably means a few extra rounds of golf per year... Know what I mean?

Tough for Winnipeg, I guess. If they liked the idea of selling matchups against Canadian teams they'll have a tough go of it with having no Canadian teams in their conference.

I do not like it because it may very well happen that a team with let?s say 87pts. would be 5th in quite even division in which leader has for example 93pts. and some other team in division with two teams with 100+ points may very well be 4th with let?s say 83pts. How come you can qualify with less points is beyond my comprehension.

And do not tell me it may not happen. Just have a look at currrent divisions within each conference. Based on points earned (system we have right now) from one division 4 teams qualify and from another only the leader or two teams. This is going to be changed and regardless of how many points your team has, the only thing which matters is to be at least 4th within the conference. Some other teams may be better but if 5th - well, have a good summer. I find it brutally unfair to those teams in tough divisions/conferences.
