2012 CBA Negotiations Thread

I'm sure in that offer the league left some points open to counter-offers
such as contract length limits etc but not the 50-50. Of course we have not
heard if they also proposed a change to HRR that might actually drop this
to less than a 50-50 split vs the old CBA.

Whatever it is I've broke my own "wake me when it's over" rule by taking an interest in this offer. I just finished reading the Bettman bio (The Instigator) and if anyone doubts Bettman would not shutter the doors for another year they've got another think coming.

Regardless if they settle I hope it's a 10 year CBA so we don't have to go through this again for 10 years - because we will. It also would make
me 10 years older without seeing a Leap Cup.  :-[  ;)

Edit: read via twitter (if true..) that no changes to HRR and it's a 6 year offer. Good news and bad news. Needs to be longer.

So when is the Luongo to Toronto deal happening?

Jeebus. Reimer is here in Vancouver and the media was interviewing him as
if he was already traded to TO and also as if Reimer was traded to Vancouver..  :P

Agreed.  And I don't think they'd be adverse to a ceiling, but something higher. (7 years?  8 years?)

That would be my guess, as well, with the number probably coming in at 8 years (or, something similar to the NBA where players being re-signed can sign for an extra season than they can on the open market - or possibly something more, if they really want to throw smaller market teams a bone here and add some oomph to potential sign-and-trade deals). The other contractual changes . . . they're both only 1 season/year different from where they are now. My guess is if the PA really insists of retaining the status quo there, the league won't put up much of a fight - maybe trade away the extra year before UFA in order to get the extra year on the ELC or vice versa.

Some tweets from John Shannon:

- If the players take 50-50...offers on other keys issues as follows...
- Free Agency would be at 28 and 8 years of service.
- Entry Level Contracts would be 3 years in Length
- Revenue sharing would be at or near 200 million dollars
- Contract Lengths would be 5 years.
- Arbitration would still exist
- The only core issue that remains intact from previous NHL offers is the length on contracts (on all new deals).
- Another interesting tidbit from NHL offer... Players' Salaries for those NHLers playing in the AHL would be part of the cap.

The ELC length will stay the same under this agreement, John Shannon corrected his initial report on this.

He also posted that NHL players in the AHL will count against the NHL cap.

That's a big one, and not a real surprise either. The league definitely wanted something to deal with the circumvention contracts. I wouldn't be surprised if, in the end, what we see is a tweak to the 35+ rule.

Something like all years after 35+ don't count in the AAV calculation and are charged to cap at the actual salary combined with a term limit should fix that loop hole.

I have some catching up to do - been golfing (yes, I'm boasting.) So what's going on? We may have a deal?

The owners made a new offer that revolves around a 50-50 split. Don Fehr called it a good start. A lot of fans totally think it's fair because they'd play in the NHL for free, dagnabbit.

Not yet, but I think we are headed towards one.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that we are watching NHL hockey on Friday November 2nd, 2012, but I might be being naively optimistic.

Going over some stuff now... Not a fan of those mega deal with term on the end likely to never be played but 5 years strikes me as a little short. 7(ish) sounds about right to me. Also;

No more being able to bury mistakes could be interesting.

I'm curious as how they would define an "NHL" player, especially veterans.  i.e: Mike Zigomannis played at the NHL level for a couple years.  Would he count towards the cap if he signs a 2-way deal?

All players who are waiver eligible maybe?

All players who are on 1 way deals?

There are a few possibilities.

Well, that's obviously something they'd have to figure out, but, my guess it would have to do with 1 way deals, salary levels, amount of recent NHL experience, etc. Someone like Zigomanis, who only has one full NHL season under his belt, probably wouldn't be considered to be an NHL player, whereas someone like Wade Redden almost certainly would be.

That's the thing with Nik, his metaphors and analogies just don't make sense to me.

So, in that way, I'm like a bankrupt parfumerie?

Umm...Yes  ;)

Well, you know, inasmuch as I no longer make scents.

I'll show myself out.

Please stay.  Especially now that your smites have returned to normal, fully operable levels.

Boy, November 2 is really, really tight, even if a deal happens ASAP.  I know these guys are professional, but that certainly wouldn't bode that well for veteran teams.  A team like Toronto, with perhaps 5 or 6 guys playing in the AHL, could have quite a jump out of the gate if this holds true.

For the sake of argument, I'm suggesting 5 or 6 could any of: Kadri, Gardiner, Ranger, Scrivens, Colborne, Komorov, Ashton, and Holzer.
