2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Ken_Rosenthal: #BlueJays-#Marlins trade not yet official. Source says MLB does not yet have all details.

Ken_Rosenthal: Asked official with one of clubs if he has any concern that commissioner might kill the deal. His response: "None at all."

Buster_ESPN: Karl Ravech is reporting there is some money adjustment, dollars going from MIA to TOR -- not a lot -- in this deal.

Not rain on this parade but I still can't see the Jays making the playoffs next year. That is, unless Rasmus and Lawrie take big steps forward, Lind, Johnson, and Romero return to previous form, and this team stays relatively healthy. A lot of things have to go right. AA's not done though, so to be fair it'll be hard to judge exactly until spring training comes around.

C Jeff Mathis to Miami

The Jays end up giving up two decent prospects in Nicolino and Marisnick but thank you Jeffrey Loria for being a bipolar cheap owner.

Wilner just posted this as well:

Mike Wilner ‏@Wilnerness590

FLA reporter @JCRMarlinsBeat says the mystery minor-leaguer going to MIA is Anthony DeSclafani. He's a good one.

JCRMarlinsbeat: Source: #Marlins chipping in $4 million, getting back CF Jake Marisnick and RHP Anthony DeSclafani among others. #bluejays

Not sure if I agree with Wilner. DeSclafani is a 22 y/o who put up okay numbers at single A. Doubt he makes much of an impact at MLB level.

I just can't believe we did this without giving up D'Arnaud, Gose, Sachez, or Syndergaard. We did give up 2 of our top prospects, Hech and Marisnick, but we didn't come close to selling the farm.

So it looks like the overall trade is:

TORONTO: RH SP Josh Johnson; LH SP Mark Buehrle; SS Jose Reyes; C John Buck; INF Emilio Bonifacio; 4 million dollars

The Jays added a solid 30+ million in payroll next year out of this deal.  But on the flip side, they added two legitimate starters (one of which being a front end starter and the other guy a consistent 200+ inning eater AND lefty).  They added a solid infielder and a decent depth bench bat without really taking anything off their roster from last year.

I have to figure this means that Gose starts the season in LF at this point.  I would still love to see them find a way to get a better hitter at 1B too but the team is considerably better than what started on the field last year.

So has this been finalized yet? I will be interested to see who else, if anyone, is going back to Miami (i.e. Mathis).

4 million dollars doesn't seem like a whole lot given the size of the contracts, but hey.

Not official yet, no, but, seems like all the important pieces have been reported.

That "front end" starter was a shadow of his former self last season coming off Tommy John surgery. I LOVED Josh Johnson before he got injured, but right now I'm proceeding with cautious optimism with him.

Just imagine if Romero, Johnson, and Happ return to their previous form...we'll have one hell of a rotation :D

Outside of his record, his numbers last season were still very good, and not far off from his career averages.

He still had a 3.8 WAR last season.  As far as I can tell, no Jays pitcher had better last season.

Buster_ESPN: TOR GM Alex Anthopoulos told a friend last week that he was working on a pie-in-the-sky trade that he didn't think would happen. But it did.

Buster_ESPN: From a pure baseball standpoint, the Marlins did well with this deal. But this trade has a lot more ripples beyond the makeup of the roster.

Not sure I agree with Olney. Short-term, this deal sucks for Florida - unless the make some huge splashes in the free agent market with the money they just freed up. Their best player, Giancarlo Stanton, is clearly not pleased, judging by his reactions on his Twitter account and what was already a pretty poor team just dealt away 3 of their best players (including 2 of their best starting pitchers). Long-term, there's a lot of potential for them, though. The prospects the Jays gave up were, for the most part, pretty good and could certainly help the Marlins out 3 or 4 seasons from now.
