2013 NHL Draft Thread

Bob McKenzie tweeted a few days ago that the weighting of the draft lottery won't change. The only difference is that whoever wins jumps to #1 overall and everyone who finished behind them in the standings slide a spot.

However, that reduced the probability of the last placed team to get the #1 pick from 48% to 25%. This is because under the old system if anyone who finished 6th last or higher won the lottery, the last placed team got the #1 pick.

That's just for this upcoming draft right? I thought I remembered him or someone else saying future drafts will be weighted differently.

I think he said they will use the same odds this year then revisit sometime in the off-season.

I hope they keep it. The rewards for organizational incompetence should be as little as possible.

So all 14 non-playoff teams have a chance at 1st overall?

Yes.

Same odds of winning the lottery, just that the winner gets #1 instead of the maximum of moving up 4 spots.

Likelihood of teams chances for first pick in draft lottery:

0.50% Winnipeg Jets
0.80% Dallas Stars
1.10% Detroit Red Wings
1.50% Phoenix Coyotes
2.10% Buffalo Sabres
2.70% New Jersey Devils
3.60% Philadelphia Flyers
4.70% Edmonton Oilers
6.20% Calgary Flames
8.10% Tampa Bay Lightning
10.70% Nashville Predators
14.20% Carolina Hurricanes
18.80% Colorado Avalanche
25.0% Florida Panthers

No Seth Jones for Colorado?  From ESPN Insider:

Apparently the Colorado Avalanche isn't all that interested in selecting defenseman Seth Jones first overall. So sayeth Joe Sakic, 12 days before the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. According to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, the Avs are more interested in picking one of Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin, or Alexander Barkov.

"If we do pick first, we're leaning more toward one of those three forwards," the executive vice president of hockey operations told The Denver Post. "We feel those three forwards are just too good to pass up."

If they draft a center, does that make Stastny a spare part?

Yup, plus they could go another route and wait til next February/March to trade O'Reilly.
