Bah. Most of those guys were in the league a couple years ago. If
this year's alumni rosters are any indication you're more likely to
see guys from the 80's. Fine by me. Bring on the Ellets, the
Salmings, the Damphousses and the Maroii.

Sittler, Turnbull, McDonald, Paiement . . . ;D

....and Palmateer!  ;D

I really hope Potvin is one of the goalies. I'd love to see The Cat play goal again, even if it's just an alumni game.

The Score confirming Leafs and the Wings? Count me in.

Hard to confirm anything when the league most likely hasn't made a final decision on anything.

Maybe not, but from what I can remember the participating teams have all been well known for quite some time prior to the league announcing them. Philly vs New York was one of the worst kept secrets of the NHL.

Even Burke has said that they haven't been asked yet.

Well until the NHL confirms it he likely won't reveal that information. But all the sources saying that Detroit vs. Toronto is the plan acknowledges that a formal invitation hasn't been extended yet. And Burke is also on record as saying the Leafs would participate in any event the league asks them to.

In response to a report Wednesday morning on a Michigan web site, MLive.com, that a deal was completed, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in an e-mail message ?if and when anything is a ?done deal? regarding the Winter Classic, it will be announced. We have made no announcements yet.?

I'm thinking how nice it would be if Probert was still around  :( Would have been a "must have" at the Alumni game...

(if of course this is a "go.")

He and Wendel could have had one more go

Yeah, I was thinking a staged fake scrap would have been great.

I trust him or bettman about as far as I can throw em personally. More likely that they are annoyed at the news being leaked before they are ready for the outcry of " why a canadian team " when it is our damn game. One can only imagine the prices scalpers will be asking for good seats tho. Probably the most expensive tickets in any outdoor game!

in my mind its plpain and simple...you include the leafs or you risk not selling out.  I think the leafs are the only team that guarantees a sellout in Ann Arbor.  Could they sell out with another team?  maybe...but they WILL sell out with the leafs.

Chicago would be the only other team they could consider. Wings-Hawks have a pretty long history between the two of them as well, especially with both still being in the same conference and both being elite teams the past few years.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I could see this happening (unless there has already been a report shooting it down). Makes just as much sense as Leafs-Wings I would think.

Obviously the NHL were never going to admit it based upon that report, but here's some more:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon says the school and the NHL are discussing bringing the Winter Classic to Michigan Stadium.

Brandon said conversations about the annual showcase game outdoors were continuing Wednesday amid reports that the Detroit Red Wings would play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 1, 2013, at the Big House, which holds 110,000 on football game days.

So you know that there are in fact discussions going on according to the athletic director, so it sounds promising.

Just a reminder, 2013 NHL Winter Classic (TOR vs. DET at U of Michigan Big House) will be made official at Thursday news conference(s).
2 hours ago via Twitter for BlackBerry?

Well, that's that.

There will be two press conferences -- 10:30 AM this morning to announce the Marlies/Grand Rapids OHL game to be played at Comerica Park, and, at 1:00 PM this afternoon, to announce the 2013 Winter Classic game to be played at U of Michigan Stadium.

Here"s more from:  http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/2013-winter-classic-plan-revealed-college-ohl-games-170508742.html;_ylt=AjVJKPDJzt5smrqEUjqLF0Z7vLYF

University of Michigan Regents approved the leasing of the Big House to the NHL for a cool $3 million this morning, allowing the league to do several things not normally done inside the stadium.

From the Detroit News:
A liquor license would be obtained ? liquor is not served on campus at Michigan ? and the NHL will have advertising and other sponsorship agreements throughout the stadium. There is no advertising at Michigan Stadium for football games.

To satisfy Red Wings owner Mike Illitch, who also owns the Detroit Tigers and Comerica Park, the numerous events that now take place in a Winter Classic host city won't all take place at Michigan Stadium. As the NHL goes for a record attendance number at the Big House, Illitch will see his baseball stadium get plenty of action with a rink of its own.

Via Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily:
Comerica Park will host an American Hockey League game between the Grand Rapids Griffins and Toronto Marlies, the minor league affiliates of the Wings and Leafs.

It will also be the site of the Great Lakes Invitational, along with two Ontario Hockey League games and numerous high school and youth games.

Michigan and Michigan State will be two of the GLI teams. Three OHL teams ? the Plymouth Whalers, Saginaw Spirit and Windsor Spitfires ? have already been confirmed.

Comerica could also host the alumni game between the Wings and Leafs.

Jim Parker of the Windsor Star reports that the London Knights will be the fourth OHL team playing in the outdoor junior game.

This is pure over saturation. Let's hope Timbits hockey will also get an outdoors game.
