2015 World Championship

Might as well have a thread because Crosby just announced he'll play at the World Championships.

Might as well create another inevitable thread about how this makes Phil Kessel look bad for some reason.

Crosby bought the Ottawa kid with epidermolysis a suit. Kessel bought him nothing.  I think that says it all.

Sid has a shot at something more than night fishing with his buddies: joining the Triple Gold club. Only eight Canadian players have done that. For Canada's sake, I hope he does it.

This is the first time Crosby has played since 2006.

His Penguins teammate Malkin has played in at least 4 separate since then (2007,2010,2012 and 2014). Crosby and Malkin played in the same number of playoff games in all those seasons and Crosby just chose stay home when Malkin chose to represent his country.

While Malkin was helping Russia win 3 medals in 2010(S), 2012(G) and 2014(G), Crosby was at home and Canada hasn't won the tournament since 2007. Crosby should be ashamed of himself for abandoning his country when they need him.

A look at what the forward lines could be:

Duchene-Crosby-Giroux
Hall-MacKinnon-Eberle
O'Rielly-Spezza-Seguin
Toffoli-Couturier-Schenn
Ennis-Eakin

That's just insane. Defence includes Barrie, Burns, Ekblad, Muzzin, and Savard. Goalies are Smith and Jones. They'll look to add at least 2 more defencemen and another goalie.

I'd be really surprised to see Giroux and Crosby together... they don't like each other much and I bet Giroux stays in the middle.  But holy heck, what a collection of centers!  If I were coach:

Duchene - Crosby - Seguin/MacKinnon
Hall - Giroux - Eberle
O'Rielly - Spezza - MacKinnon/Seguin
Toffoli - Courtourier - Eakin
Schenn - Ennis

Hopefully their offense will be enough to blow away the competition.  The defence and goaltending doesn't look all that awe inspiring to me.

Swap Eberle with Seguin and those top 2 lines are 2018 Olympic-esque.

3-0 after the 1st against Latvia.

Lines today are:

MacKinnon - Crosby - Spezza
Ennis - Giroux - Seguin
Eberle - Duchene - Hall
Eakin - Couturier - Toffoli - O'Rielly
(Schenn is scratched)

Burns - Muzzin
Ekblad - Barrie
Hamhuis - Savard
Wiercioch

Smith
Jones

US's forward group:

Nelson-Bonino-Moses
Lee-Arcobello-Morin
Vesey-Eichel-Lewis
Hendricks-Smith-Sexton-Larkin

Man, Phil's really missing out there.

He could have played with Bozak after Bozak after Bozak.

You know, I suppose others must have made this point but all things considered it's pretty amazing Crosby decided to play. He has absolutely no need to in terms of securing an Olympic spot, he has a crazy workload for the Penguins and has proven absolutely everything there is to proove in his career.

I really don't understand any Canadian hockey fan who doesn't like the guy.

I think a lot of it boils down to over exposure and over hype. Crosby is a phenomenal player and the best of his generation, but the way some people go on about him you'd think he's one of the greatest players of all time, and that just isn't something people who don't like him believe.
