2021 Training Camp Thread

Guessing this means guys like Korshkov, Malgin, and SDA are gonna stay in Europe to finish their seasons. Other than that, no real surprises here.

Brazeau is huge. Nylander gets up to 200 lbs. Matthews drops down a bit, was always weird seeing him listed at 220+ lbs.

Full chart.

The key to Engvall sticking with the NHL group is going to be his willingness to put his zippy speed together with his mass to become a very formidable forechecker/transporter.

I wonder if not having any pre-season games could help him here. Add in the fact that the team might need him as a PK option and he's probably not as much of a longshot as it sometimes seems. And if he does start to use that combination of size and speed more effectively having him and Simmonds forechecking on the 4th line could be an interesting option.

I suspect Keefe will backpocket him. He's waiver exempt for a bit, costs more than the other options, and is a very known quantity as coach's favourite utility man. Spend a couple of weeks cycling through the taxi squad for the bottom mix, and if all the offensively sexy options poop out, Engvall is in to at least set an acceptable floor.

All I'm asking of him is to be more of a bull in the china shop in mentality. There aren't many players in the league who can catch him and handle him if he is exerting his physique to exercise his skill (similar to Matthews now and Thornton in his heyday).

I can't see Thornton lasting on the top line.

It's weird, but I'm all for at least giving it a shot.

Keefe knows he can plug Hyman right back anywhere in the top-6 and he won't miss a beat.

If I?m the coach that sees that 97-34-16 line, just cover Matthews. The other two cannot or will not shoot.

Leafs and other teams won't cycle through the taxi squads unless those players are waiver exempt. It's is not like an expanded roster. As it stands right now, with Keefe's lines today, only Barabanov is waiver exempt, so for the Leafs to cycle guys in and out, players will have to go on waivers.  Who is going on waivers so you can interchange these players? Maybe Boyd, Vesey if Lehtonen, Barabanov, Robertson blow the doors off? It won't be any of the 6 non waiver exempt D men.
I have a feeling the Leafs may keep 3 goalies to start the year because they may be fearful of losing Dell to Washington.

Thornton is the only one that has played any hockey lately, so maybe he can get Matthews going quicker.
