Adam Brooks re-signed for 2 years @ 725K AAV (two-way)

I remembered that Brooks was drafted as a bit of an older prospect but for whatever reason I thought he was drafted within the past couple years, was like 21 or 22, and had only been with the Marlies for like 1 or 2 seasons. He was drafted in 2016, just turned 24 years old, and has completed 3 seasons with the Marlies now. Nic Petan is just 1 year older than him!

That's not to say that I'm disappointed with where he's at, but I'm kinda taking the "prospect" tag off of him at this point.

It was his 3rd time through the draft when picked, and even then still did an extra year in the WHL as an overager (130 pts in 66 gp) 1B center behind Sam Steel* (Anaheim, picked with the draft pick we sent in the Andersen deal) before turning pro as the Leafs were in overhaul/tank mode and the Marlies was going to be awash with injury subs and contract cast offs.

* Steel's numbers dropped significantly the following season without the shelter of Brooks in the lineup; he went from 131 pts in 66 gp with Brooks, down to 83 pts in 54 gp. There was probably an injury there.

As expected, this is another one of those 2 year deals that bridge an uptick in league minimum salary so his second year comes in under league min on the salary cap hit.

Malgin and Kivihalme likely get similar. If Bracco ends up re-signing here (I kind of doubt it), it'll be similar.

Dubas needs to do that to make up for the overpayment on Holl.

How am I supposed to feel about this?

We're good with it. A little insulation for the kids.

28 year old UFA 4th line winger* for 2.5M x 4 years (3.42% of the cap)
vs
28 year old UFA bottom-4 right-shot defenseman (playing top shutdown pair for most this season) for 2M x 3 years (2.45% of the cap)

* the most easily replaced position on the roster for league minimum

Matt Martin's Leaf career: 21 pts (8 G, 13A) in 132 GP (5M spent)
Justin Holl's Leaf career:  21 pts (4 G, 17A) in 81 GP (1.35M + 2 games at 650k AAV)

What's that got to do with the price of eggs?

I'm genuinely surprised it turns out he wasn't 24 years old when he was drafted.

That's the genius of Dubas. Other teams draft marginal prospects and have to wait 4-5 years to find out they won't contribute at the NHL level. By drafting older marginal prospects, Dubas has cut that time in half.

Jokes on you that was a Lou/Hunter draft!

There are no particular knock-your-socks-off standouts*, but our 2006 draft produced an inordinate number of NHL players.

* one was a take-your-pants-off standout though

3 are still in the league 14 years later.

And the name of that General Manager presiding over that draft?

Is there a way to quickly see if any team has ever drafted two or more 1000+ GP players in one draft?
Because Pat Quinn did in 2002 (Alex Steen, Matt Stajan!).
