All-Purpose Off-Season Thread

Nik the Trik said:
Thought I'd start a thread to talk about off-season stuff that didn't include player transactions. Thought this was a good start:

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/15853516/st-louis-blues-coach-ken-hitchcock-says-not-coaching-year

Hitchcock will be back to coach the Blues but says it's his final year coaching.

The Blues have some tweaking to do if they're going to go farther next season.  They need some more secondary scoring at least.  More speed at the forward position would help too.  JMHO.

So, Stamkos to St. Louis then?

So here's an interesting story that has nothing to do with Steven Stamkos. Peter Karmanos is being sued by his sons:

http://www.freep.com/story/money/business/2016/06/01/peter-karmanos-sued-nick-jason/85240570/

The suit alleges that Karmanos took 100+ million dollars out of a family trust to pay for expenses related to the running of the Hurricanes, Karmanos missed the first scheduled repayment of the 100+ with interest and so now the entire amount is due. The suit also alleges that over the years Karmanos has borrowed roughly 180 million dollars from various entities, including the NHL, to fund the Canes.

Now, I guess this could all just be arcane nonsense. The "trust" was established by Karmanos as an estate tax dodge so the money is still his(or his family's) but suing your own father is a pretty drastic step. Either way, it seems pretty clear that things aren't great for the Hurricanes and given that rumours of their being for sale have been around for quite a while it seems pretty clear that right now they're existing in their current form almost entirely on Karmanos' good graces.

My how far they have fallen...

The Habs have added Kirk Muller as an associate coach/midseason replacement for Therrien: http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=884824

I like the move for them. Muller's handled the powerplay duties wherever he's gone. St. Louis has had the 2nd best powerplay over the past 2 seasons with him behind the bench. And I saw someone else post this on twitter:

Sean Coleman ‏@SColemanCTV  18 minutes ago
The Kirk Muller effect
Habs power play with Muller (2006-11):  21.6% (2nd)
Habs PP since then:  16.7% (26th)

Obviously he can't take all the credit for it but it's clearly something he's had success with. Montreal's powerplay was 25th last season and 25th in 14/15 too.

I think that this would affect the decision on expansion, no?

I suppose it depends on what they were leaning towards in that regard. If, like some think, the decision was just to expand to Vegas and leave Quebec City as a spot to move a team you'd think this would convince them that's a smart way to keep it even if the Canes aren't quite at that panic stage yet.

New Panthers uniforms/logo

I don't hate them, I actually like the arm patch/logo but I wish the Logo wasn't on the stripe in the middle. Also, the Panthers' owner seems really into the military stuff but the Captain/Alternate thing seems silly to me.

Why do they need a band across the chest? It looks odd.

"Well, other baseball teams besides the Yankees wear pinstripes," Viola said. "Montreal is a great franchise with decades of tradition. We don't have their history, but we see ourselves as being on that same level in terms of talent and professionalism, and we hope they're flattered that we were inspired by that visual element. There's certainly room for more than one version of it."

I realize it's a minor point but other teams in baseball wear pinstripes besides the Yankees because other teams in baseball wore pinstripes before the Yankees. Heck, other teams in baseball wore pinstripes before the Yankees were the Yankees.

At first, I thought these guys played in a Euro league.  The new Panthers uniform have a bit of the European-esque look.  The colours, the decals, the crest shape, the stripes, etc.

If they were attempting a more 'serious' look to their apparel, well then it has been achieved.

I always thought they had to wear pinstripes for the slimming effect, because baseball player shape.
