Borgman hasn't had the smoothest transition to the NHL and could have jetted back to the SHL easily. His signing is a decision to continue leveraging the development team here on the Marlies and get a crack at the depleted NHL depth next season.

Pretty surprised he would take a two-way offer instead of going back home. Especially since he's already played most of his ELC on an AHL salary.

if Hainsey and Gardiner are not resigned Borgman could have a shot...

Him, Rosen, and Holl will likely occupy 3 of the 7 or 8 defenceman spots on the roster for a combined $2.125mil. That's pretty good with the whole cap crunch thing.

Babcock hates Holl though, given how many times he's scratched him this season, so there's still a shot for Borgman.

Hard to argue that. For whatever reason Babs doesn't want to use Holl....maybe he's saving him for the playoffs lol!

Part of me wonders if Babcock doesn't hate or not want to use Holl, but rather, just likes Oz more than he should and felt he wouldn't know for sure what he had in Oz unless he played him every day.

In particular, Holl is well known by the organization and its possible they felt they wouldn't be hindering him much (in comparison to Oz) by having him in the pressbox.  He's 27 and he's probably not going to develop much more in the AHL.  He's a 6-7 defender who's here for depth.  I would have prefered he saw some sort of rotation up until Muzzin was acquired.

But Oz was coming from Russia- he'd have a much bigger adjustment to make compared to Holl coming from the AHL.  Oz having an out-clause if he got sent down to the AHL might have made Babcock feel like he should give Oz plenty of icetime to see how he would adjust.

And now maybe they feel like they have a better handle on Oz- so now its time to rotate them through to keep them both fresh for the playoffs in case of injuries.

Anyways, I'm HOPING this is a sign of things to come, that they rotate until the regulars are back to keep them both fresh.  In which case, I also expect Holl proves to be the better d-man to Babcock.

Good signing, especially if the top guys are taking most of the cap for next year. Protection signing.
And who knows how good these guys can get. Seems like most of the call ups end up producing.

I think there is a lot of truth in what you say. I don't see Oz as a castoff yet. I think it takes a long time to adjust to the smaller ice and like you said, Babs is giving him every chance. I still would like to see him use Holl more tho. I think he can be a 6/7 guy for us. I do like Borgman tho and if memory serves he did play on the right side up here. Not sure where he's played on the Marlies. Dubas mention both he and Rosen when talking about Gardiner's injury so I think they were the first 2 going to get a shot. All in all tho Borgman is a good signing. He's only 23.
