Assistant coach changes

I'm so proud of my online campaign to get DJ Smith a head coach job!

Edit: 3 year deal according to CJ
Zaitsev to Ottawaaaaaaaa (for Chabot? :D)

Good riddance. Historically bad PK cost us in the Bruins series, and they've generally under performed PK vs personnel imo.

I liked Hiller, but I'm A-ok with something different in McFarland.

I think Hiller got a bum rap. Prior to this season he pretty consistently had a top rated powerplay. And this season despite the success not being there the Leafs were rated at or near the top in a ton of shot/expected goal metrics. But still, sometimes things get stale and you need to change it up.

The PP again imo, really underperformed their personnel. The 2nd unit had nothing going all year long, they relied on that seam pass way too often and just didn't use enough creativity to get other teams moving and keep them guessing. They were a bit of a one-trick pony.

McFarland signed with Florida 2017. He had one season where it looked like they kept status quo from the previous build, and then last year changed things up drastically. I didn't follow the Panthers at all, but the numbers are startlingly different.

It's like they found a PP weapon and rode that pony (Mike Hoffman), but gave up some breakaways the other way and had bad bad goaltending.

Last season Florida averaged 5:18 a game on the powerplay, and their top unit (which was loaded up) played about 3:30 of that (66%).

Toronto averaged 4:21 a game on the powerplay and the top unit played about 2:35 of that (59%).

So McFarland/Florida played their top unit a little more than Hiller/Toronto did.

One somewhat concerning thing is that I've read Florida's PP really relied on that Hoffman one-timer (and that heat map confirms it, the red is all him). We don't really have anyone with that particular skill set.

Meaning 41% of our time with an "advantage" was handed over to one of the most spectacularly ineffective units in the history of the world.

Matthews is arguably a one time threat even with the strong-side wrister.

At the same time, I'm pretty sure the coaching staff will try a different mix given the tools at hand. Build the PP around Marner/Nylander + Matthews, instead of just glomming Matthews onto the Marner/Kadri/JvR model.

Hiller was in charge of PP but was he also deciding ice time deployment on that PP or is that Babcock? Would seem to me a simple improvement is to have your first unit out there at least 1:30 of the 2 min PP
