Game Notes

COL
?Kuemper (9-5-0, 2.84 GAA, .903 Sv%) will likely start for the Avalanche
?Some early season struggles with injuries, Covid, and below-expectations goaltending have Colorado sitting just outside of a very crowded Wild Card race in the West. Things are heating up for them though as they are 7-1 in their last 8 games
?The Avs will welcome back Nathan MacKinnon as he has missed those past 8 games with a lower body injury
?Kadri really stepped up in MacKinnon's absence recording 17 points in those 8 games. He has 27 points in 18 games this season which puts him tied for 4th in league scoring

TOR
?Campbell (12-4-1, 1.64 GAA, .946 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?The Leafs come home after a 4-game road trip that saw them go 4-0
?Joey Anderson will make his season debut with the Leafs

Keefe's remarks on Joey Anderson's debut, Marlies call ups in general:
Is there anything you want players on the Marlies to know about how they can make an impact in a short amount of time?

Keefe: My focus when I talk to these guys ? and I spoke to Joey today ? is that we are going to give you some little things to focus on within our structure with the things that are important. Especially in a small sample, they have to come up here and be confident and comfortable in who they are as players.

If you come in and start overthinking it and change who you are, but you only have a short window to make an impression and help our team, you are going to be in tough. Joey is a guy who plays a hard, simple, intelligent game. That is what you look for no matter who you are.

You are up here for a reason, and whatever that reason is, you need to display that. That is the biggest thing: for us to not get in their way. They have enough going on in their head. They are uncomfortable when they come up here. That is just the reality of it. You want to try to make them as comfortable as possible to just be who they are.

Whether it is their linemates or our team in general, we can adapt to them rather than them having to overthink things and adapt to us.

Kadri, whom the refs can't help but penalize for no reason vs Bunting, who is Kadri 2.0

I wonder if the other teammates follow suit

Bunting doesn't lead the league in penalties drawn anymore so all should be good.

So according to the chuckleheads on the drive time show yesterday this is the real test for the leafs because the leafs haven?t faced any real competition yet.

You?d think the team was 5-15 listening to these guys yesterday. Brunt finally piped up and said ?they've just won 12 of their last 14 games?.

They could lose today I don?t care as long as it?s a well played game. They have to lose at some point.

It's always amazing how there is always an excuse for why the Leafs aren't as good as their record suggests:

Beat Vegas - but they are all injured
Beat Tampa - but without Kucherov
Beat Boston - yeah but
Lose to LA - see they suck
Beat Philly - does that really count
Beat Calgary - yeah but they barely won
Beat Buffalo - yeah but Aaron Dell sucks
Beat Nashville - yeah but they aren't good
Beat New York - yeah but they aren't good
Lose to Pittsburgh - see LA
Beat New York - COVID
Beat LA - doesn't count they are middle of the pack
Beat San Jose - doesn't count they are middle of the pack
Beat Anaheim - doesn't count they are middle of the pack

The games against Colorado and Minnesota are definitely good tests as they are facing good teams who are also playing well but we are 1/4 of the way through the season.  Ultimately how the team performs in the postseason is what matters but we have passed the point of just being on a hot streak.  The Leafs aren't going to go on a 12-2 pace for the rest of the year but they are a good team.

Is Semyonov just not a bottom 6 forward?  I hope the next time he gets a callup its to play more in the top 6 for a few shifts to see how he performs there.  I think that might be part of his problem in the games he got.  I don't want him playing 20 minutes but it might be worth it to see him perform in a more offensive role.

This stuff isn't going to mean much to guys making 5+ million a year but this has to be the kind of thing that is going to keep the Leafs stockpiled with the better selection of league minimum players who are borderline for the NHL.

Do we know what kind of injury Kase has?  Any conjectures beyond "upper body"?  (It's not a concussion or head/neck-related is it?)

If I had to guess, it would be shoulder - he went into the net pretty hard near the end of that Islanders game.

I think he hit his head also. Leafs are being extra cautious with him because of his history. They want him for the long haul and hopefully a long playoff run.
