Blacker to Ducks for depth.

Carlyle says that Holland will get an opportunity to play with some of the team's better players.

Carlyle wouldn't say if Holland acquisition would push JVR back to wing. Seems like a possibility.

Well Smith isn't moving from that 2nd line spot after his game and McClement ain't going anywhere. And Holland wasn't acquired to play wing. So yeah, he and Smith are definitely going to be centering our top 2 lines.

Even before getting this kid I was wondering if Carlyle might try Smithson as the fill-in on the top line.  He's got the most NHL experience and he's shown he can win draws.

I remember at least one offensive zone faceoff last night where Carlyle had Smithson out with Kessel and Lupul.

Holland is hovering around a career 40% on the draws so he won't be much of a help on faceoffs unfortunately, but hopefully given some good wingers he can show what he's got offensively.

Man, I'm getting a weird forboding feeling that this will be a turning point for us this season...

That's called optimism, and you need to put a stop to it immediately.

No, I mean a turning point where we miss the curve straddle the edge of a cliff. Before plunging downward in a fiery blaze.

I kind of figured there would be a move for depth and Nonis acquired a better player than I thought he would. Hopefully the kid likes the spotlight and comes to earn a spot, at least until Bolland gets back.

I like the trade until the pick becomes a 2nd, Staubitz was the cost of doing business I think. I give credit to Nonis for trying to fill the holes.

He's also been arguably the worst offensive player in the NHL the past few seasons. Winning faceoffs is great but unless he's skating the bench directly afterward keep him away from Kessel.

I see. Well, carry on.

At first glance, this looks like a good deal for the Leafs. Hopefully in time it turns out to be a great one.

I doubt he would drag down Kessel. If he can continue to be responsible defensively it's not a bad short term solution.

Heh, the only asset I'd care about losing is the (potential) 2nd round pick. Blacker is no great loss.

As for Holland, I can remember dating back to the 09 draft that there was a decent amount of hype following him as a potential big center with good upside.

Even if he's a flip a coin type prospect at this point, it's still a worthwhile gamble.

That's where my thought processes were trending toward.

I got to see Peter Holland play all the time in Guelph and think this is a pretty good deal for the Leafs. He's a big body who is fairly skilled with the puck, but could use some work on the defensive side of his game. I honestly didn't think Anaheim gave him a fair shake and will regret giving up on him so soon. I think Anaheim is more in love with Rickard Rakell and so they passed over Holland too quickly.

A younger Joe Colborne who has performed better at the AHL level.  This gives us a kid with upside that can be sent back to the Marlies when we get all our centres back without the risk of losing him to waivers.  Something that Joe couldn't provide.  The fact that he is an Ontario kid and loves the Leafs is also great.  I doubt we keep him past the 25 games nor will we need to, so this was a great and necessary trade in my books.  I just don't know how Blacker would have ever been able to fit in on this club anytime soon, too much of his type of dman depth on this team.  Great move.

from what I have seen and heard, great move..I grew up in Caledon so am pulling for him. His Guelph and Ducks highlight reels are very very impressive and was a point a game in the AHL. Good signing.

So maple leafs hotstove put together a piece comparing Holland to other 1st round picks that played in the AHL and their PPG numbers while doing so.

He is in pretty rare company right there, most of those guys are impactful NHL'ers.

It's too early, but Nonis might have pulled off a heist right here.

The whole thread has been about Holland, but what did we lose in Blacker?  I pay only the slightest attention to the Marlies, but the few times I heard him mentioned on here he was spoken of highly, at least as highly as Holzer.  Anybody want to venture an opinion/analysis?

He's been a healthy scratch for the Marlies most of the season and never really got his offence going with them since he finished junior. My guess is the team didn't really lose much there - he seems like he's really just another run of the mill defensive prospect.

So is he more of an offensive d-man than a shutdown guy?  If he is, then there is nothing not to like about the trade except the possible loss of a 2nd IMO.  We have more than enough offensive-minded defensemen now.
