Borgman traded to STL for Jordan Schmaltz

Schmaltz is 2 years older than Borgman. He has 4 AHL seasons under his belt and hasn't really been able to solidify himself a spot in a NHL line-up. His numbers, both fancy and not, don't seem particularily impressive. He had 0 goals, 2 assists, and a 41.24% CF in 20 games with the Blues last season.

He is a right-handed shot which could give him an advantage over others, but I'm not really sure we've got a NHLer on our hands here. I thought Borgman had a solid shot of starting the season with the Leafs with Dermott out and was looking forward to what he could do. Ah well.

Neither guy moves the needle much for their new teams. Leafs needed some RHD depth, and I guess this helps there some. Sort of. Maybe the coaching staff here can eke out a little more of the potential that saw Schmaltz taken in the first round in his draft year.

I liked Borgman's game this season and was hoping he'd crack the Leafs lineup. Oh well, good luck to him. Hope Schmaltz can fill what the Leafs or Marlies need.

Too many lefties.  This seems like a decent play to me.

This move ever so slightly increases that chances of Ben Harpur playing though. Not good... not good at all!

Doesn't appear to be good for sure. Maybe they think Schmaltz can fill in until Dermott is ready??? Do we expect our 3rd pairing to get much ice?

Until Dermott returns the defence will look like:

Muzzin-Barrie
Rielly-Ceci
Marincin/Gravel/Harpur-Holl/Schmaltz/Liljegren

Until Dermott returns our defense kind of scares me.

You Nostradamus, lol?

Nah, he was just in that mushy tier of good enough to trade, not good enough to clearly crack the bottom of the roster in the bottom pairing role (PK, safety). Prime target to shift for a rebalancing somewhere.

Good call. It's not like he was top 4 for the Leafs. I did like his game though but that's in the A.

Wow. Yet another new face to the organization. Im going to have to pull up the lineup card before watching the Leafs or Marlies for the first half of the season. Let?s just hope Dubas is good at finding diamonds in the rough with some of these guys.

Is it too much to expect a few pleasant surprises from all the unheralded acquisitions this off-season?

Like mentioned by herman, Hasktol coached this guy so I'm sure he had some input. Either way this is a very low risk trade. Worst thing is they could lose him on waivers when/if sending him down.

I don?t know that Schmaltz will amount to much. He?s a longer body though.

This looks like a favour to Borgman to give him an opportunity, and get Hakstol someone familiar (reclamation project that?s not Andy MacDonald, thank the Zamboni driver) to insulate Holl and Liljegren.
