But it sounds so made up...

Well well well...so we can take shots at Nik all day, and he can't hit back.

This could be fun.

You know, I usually weigh Nik's opinions against those of nutman, and figure the truth, as well as reason, are usually tilted more in nutman's favour.  I think most would agree that Nik's posts are lacking in facts.

I point to his dismal karma rating as evidence of this.

For what it's worth, that's not really how it works. It has to be something I'm genuinely sorry about and something that I want to not do again in the future. So, just as a hypothetical, if I call a fellow poster a moron and that poster is a moron I don't think there's anything inherently wrong about that.

You know, hypothetically.

I'd like an apology for you not agreeing with all of my posts.

Fair enough. I'm sorry for not having done a better job of convincing you that your posts are wrong.

Have you read A.J. Jacobs The Year of Living Biblically? http://www.ajjacobs.com/books/yolb.asp

No. And, to be honest, I'm not trying to present myself as either a paragon of or particularly knowledgeable about Judaism. As an advocate of the Reconstructionist movement within Judaism I'm very much out of the mainstream in terms of religious thought.

I just thought that taking this approach towards Yom Kippur, a holiday I've always liked the spirit of, might be constructive.

In essence, that's what his book is about, but in a broader sense. He explores what it's like to actually follow the traditions, rules, guidelines presented in both the old and new testament, in a humorous way. He's Jewish as well.

Is it over yet ?

No. The fast is sundown last night to sundown tonight. My seeking atonement/charitable contributions/what have you is largely over and in theory I'm deep in prayer.

I have a friend who is Jewish and my parents, during their business years met many, many Jewish people of any and every variety.  Sometimes one may mistake them for being arrogant, off the cuff, bombastistic, etc., but perhaps those are stereotypical descriptions interspersed with plenty of clich?s. Clich?s aside,  my family has met plenty of wonderfully warm Jewish folk over the years.

In reality, people of the Jewish faith are a unique community in that they share ancestry in a homeland that has been much maligned and even threatened to oblivion from the earliest days of Israel's roots.

I once read an article about a coop school in Israel harbouring both Palestinian and Hebrew students.  Many of these young women, though some sported differences of opinion concerning their respective homelands, all shared one common thing -- friendship for and toward each other, as well as, most importantly, the yearning for true peace and respect towards each other's cultures.  Wonderful!
