UPDATE: @NYIslanders lock up winger Cal Clutterbuck with five-year, $17.5M ($3.5M AAV) extension. http://www.tsn.ca/clutterbuck-agrees-to-five-year-extension-1.627757 ?

I think I liked Clutterbuck more than Martin, but that's still probably an even worse contract.

The old "best 4th line in hockey" will have a combined cap hit of $9.35mil next season.

Rightly or wrongly, isn't he also playing a significantly bigger role this season?

He had a brief spin on Tavares' wing opposite Josh Bailey in early November. Not sure how long that lasted, but he's currently back with Cizikas and getting third line minutes.

NYI aren't in a terrible cap situation at the moment, but some of these contracts look like fledgling albatrosses, and a bit like the 2004-5 Leafs build. Superstar captain with no real wingers. Good D-pairing that will be overpriced soon. Overpaid fan-favourite grinders. Little to nothing in the pipeline.

I know that you were just speaking in generalizations, but I wouldn't call Beauvillier, Ho Sang, Barzal, and Dal Colle "nothing". Whether or not they can develop those players is another story though, and based on how they've handled Ryan Strome so far I do have some doubts.

Caught me red-handed, mailing it in this Friday afternoon. Of the bunch, I like Barzal best. Should be a huge opportunity at the World Juniors for him and Dylan Strome to try and carry the team.

It's a close call for me. 5 years is a long time though.
