Coach Mike Babcock

Some quotes from Mike Babcock today that make me a happy Leafs fan:

"The number one characteristic of a Toronto Maple Leaf is a good human being. If you don't fit that, you're not going to be here."

"Anything that's been going on is going to get cleaned up. We're going to be a fit, fit team. A team that talks to the media every day - after a win, after a loss, after practice - and owns their own stuff. When it's good, it's good. When it's not good, you're going to step up too."

"I just know we're going to play hard. I won't accept anything but that. Right now, we're not going to be the most talented group. I don't have a problem with that. But we're going to walk out every day with our heads held high because we competed. We're going to practise that way. We're going to train that way. We're going to eat that way. We're going to sleep that way. We're going to be Maple Leafs."

The one thing I'm sure of is, if there's any pushback from players who don't want to play Babcock's way, Babcock is going to come out on top.

So who's not a good human being?

This just might be the message Kessel needs to hear...so that he can expand the number of teams he would except a trade to.

Or, if the Leafs keep him, to play better next year and make himself a more attractive commodity for the team to peddle. To me that's the best case scenario, don't expect it to happen.

Aww...Tigger, you are becoming as cynical as the Bulldog.  :(

Why would one automatically assume that this would be directed at kessel?

If memory serves it was kadri who was suspended for questionable behaviour.

The part about not talking to media and the part about fitness. Possibly the part about training harder too. Granted, these perceptions are media founded, for whatever that's worth.

...I can still cheer for them though, right?

My counter to those Babcock statements, is wait until the media rears their fangs in his direction and see just how inviting he is with them.  The Detroit media fawns over the Red Wings.  The Maple Leafs media tries to undermine.  They have done it for more than 10 years now as they were going at it with Quinn, Wilson, JFJ, the players, etc.

I remember Nieuwendyk coming in and banning newspapers and newspaper talk in the dressing room.

All of which could apply to kadri.

Yes. He's likely referring to a group of players. If it was a lone player or two he wouldn't talk as if it were a team issue, which he seems to be doing.

It's disturbing to think that these types of things are happening, but I don't doubt it for second. It fits right in with how this team performs.

Good point. I thought RC did a pretty good job at media in this town. He never got too rattled, laughed and joked at the inane stuff and gave the ol' compete level speech nightly. In and out, nobody hurt.

See, I completely disagree with how Carlyle handled the media.  He was chummy with them, but I found that he did absolutely nothing to try and deflect criticisms/pressure off his players.  That's what Quinn and Maurice were great with in Toronto. They protected the team and took on the media (albeit in vastly different ways).

I think we're going to see a lot of Babcock protecting his players.  Part of establishing his 'feel safe' environment.

Yeah, if anything, Carlyle threw players under the bus.

I think Babcock is going to stare so intensely at media personal, they'll be hiding out in Eklund's basement.

Kadri is the guy that I think will benefit most from Babcock. I am looking forward to seeing if he takes a step forward in the next year or so or if what we have seen so far is all there is to see.

Still, the media never got to him or appeared to be a problem for him.

Personally, I have little sympathy for 90% of the roster, but I do recognize that most respected coaches avoid that. It distracts the team.

RC didn't want to distract the Leafs from what they...er...were..doing.
