Coach Mike Babcock

So exciting, a new baby and new coach on the same day!!!

This deserves it's own thread!  Congrats to you and Mrs. Wigwal!!!! A new leaf fan and a new head coach! Awesome news.

And honestly, I didn't think he'd come to Toronto but I'm pleasantly surprised.

I.... uh..... what?

But wait... what ? Is.... what ?

This is bananas!

Wow. I think I sat in a silent stunned glorious grin for about 60 seconds.

This is a glorious, glorious day.

I love the sour grapes coming from the Sabres' blogger on Hockeybuzz (I know, I know).  Now Buffalo is the smart team, and the Leafs are in instant turmoil, with Dubas and Hunter sure to be screwed over by Babcock  ;D

Elliotte Friedman confirms that the Leafs have signed off on giving Babcock player personnel decision making power. In other words, Babcock now has the juice to back door his GM whenever he wants to. I would hate to be Toronto's new GM. Keep your head on a swivel Mark Hunter and Kyle Dubas. Babcock's ego may become intolerable in Toronto. I applaud Tim Murray for sticking to his guns and no giving total personnel permission and control to Babcock. Looks like that was the deal breaker in Buffalo.

So, Babcock's agent took Buffalo's best financial offer to Toronto and the Leafs agrees to meet it.

All the more reason for Sabres fans to hate the Maple Leafs.

Greasy move, Mike.

An article from a Sabres beat-reporter:

Through all of this odd hero-worshipping, a few points stand out:

---I'd like to know why seemingly everyone, especially in the Canadian media, has automatically deemed Babcock the best coach in the NHL? Just because of those two Olympic gold medals? I think Joel Quenneville, among others, might have a thing or two to say about that. Sorry, it didn't take some immense coaching genius for Babcock to put Sidney Crosby on the ice for an offensive zone faceoff in overtime of the gold-medal game in Vancouver.

---It strikes me that the best coach in the NHL shouldn't be on a six-year run of not getting his team past the second round of the playoffs -- especially when four of those teams had at least 100 points in the regular season.

---It strikes me that the best coach in the NHL and a man constantly referred to as a future Hall of Famer should have more than one Stanley Cup.

---It strikes me that the best coach in the NHL should have had all kinds of teams, winners and losers, banging down his door when he proclaimed he was a free agent.

Now imagine how the article would have sounded if Babcock picked Buffalo haha

I LOVE this.... finally! an awesome coach in Toronto...... my son the RedWings fan understandably devastated/depressed/po'd about this...

Hope he starts with a broom to the floaters.......

And 3...2...1...until Sabres or Senators fans start talking about how we need a salary cap on coaches.

I'll be really interested to see if this starts to raise the salaries of other coaches like Babcock apparently wanted. Or if other owners just scoff at those demands.

Surprised. Also intrigued. With Keefe seemingly set for the Marlies, it puts a few more building blocks in place that somewhat refresh and renew my interest.

The draft, while already of interest, just became a little more so. I'd be surprised if they don't/can't do a few inventive things there with the likes of Kessel and Phaneuf.

If Detroit demands compensation for Babcock I wonder if it becomes part of a Phaneufsy deal.

I thought the Wings set the compensation at a 3rd round pick a couple of weeks ago.  Perhaps I'm think of another exec, but I thought compensation had been pre-determined.  And that Buffalo and Toronto signed an agreement to surrender that as part of the permission to talk to him, if they ended up signing him.

Is the 3rd Round pick that goes to Detroit as compensation for the signing a 2015 or 2016 pick? The Leafs are already without a 2nd Round pick from the Bernier trade which would leave a big hole between rounds 1 and 4 in a supposedly deep draft.

You heard it here, ages ago.  Great signing, and Keefe with the Marlies, definitely some light at the end of the tunnel.

They can give up the pick in any of the next 3 drafts.

I assume the Leafs can re-coup the draft pick through any one of the trades of Kessel, Phaneuf, Bozak etc.
