Colborne recalled

OldTimeHockey said:
Is there not a rule on recalls after the trade deadline? Perhaps they didn't want to waste one after if they needed to.

According to the MOU between the league and the PA, the 4 recall rule is still in effect until the beginning of the playoffs, at which point there's no longer a limit on the number of recalls, but teams cannot have more than 3 players on the roster that were recalled after the deadline.

Suprised that no one has commented on Colbournes game last night, had one very good scoring chance and just missed but I like the way he moved last night and seems to have become much more fluid on his skates...would like to see him center Kessel and JVR for a night..why not??  Put  Bozak between Frattin and Macarther for a game.

coment on his game. I think for the time he got, and the defensive game Jersey plays, he played a good game. Highlander has a good Idea, I too would like to see what he could do in place of Bozak for a game or two. but I can see that we have a heap of teams that are still to close for comfort, also we have to be thinking home ice as well. I guess nows not the time to toss him in. it will come though, I see big things with this kid going forward. I believe he is that #1 center were waiting for.

Yeah it was just hard to get any read on him with just a few shifts and 5 minutes of ice against Jersey's weak line.  I think that they either need to play him on the wing 3rd line or not at all.  I imagine he joins the Marlies at some point this week at least until after our Monday game.  Marlies next game isn't until Friday, so he may stick around until then and we find out the status of Lupul.

In the short time he played, I got that impression too. Not fast, but seemed fluid for sure.

Really would have rather seen him either play on the wing in the top 6 or even get the occasional shift with someone who can actually touch the puck.

There was one play where Colton Orr came into the offensive zone on a rush and he skated towards the boards with his head up (good).  The problem is that he was facing the boards and wasn't looking across the ice where he had a guy open on a partial 2-on-1.  So instead of potentially making a play for a scoring chance, he just awkwardly skated the puck into a harmless situation and then promptly lost it when a guy closed in on him.

It's not his fault that he doesn't know how to actually play hockey, but its a shame when you have a guy with some skill stuck playing with the guy.

Comments like this drive me up the wall. Saying that he doesn't know how to play hockey couldn't be further from the truth. He is playing in the NHL.

I ask you to step on the ice with some of these scrappers. I've played with some of the best the OHL had to offer and let me tell you..When you put them on the ice with a bunch of mediocre's like myself, they look damn good.

If they don't know how to play hockey, I ask, what the heck have the rest of us been doing our whole lives?

Pretty sure he meant in relation to other NHL players, not compared to you or I.

This is really true.  I understand that on a message board like this fans throw around a lot of descriptions (like, "He's garbage") that should not be at all taken literally.  But still, it's always good to keep in mind that anyone who makes the NHL is, by definition, an elite player.  Heck, anyone who makes the AHL is, in truth ... compared to the entire pool of hockey players.

That's fine, but until the scrappers quit dressing, we can do nothing but assume they DO in fact know how to play hockey. Hockey involves fighting. Whether or not it should involve fighting is another discussion completely. Currently it's 'needed' or 'desired', therefore Orr can play hockey.

It's great to be on the sidelines and say.."look at him, he can't play hockey"....Umm yes he can, There's many Junior players and AHL players that would kill to be doing, what he's doing right now.

The fact that these guys do score goals at an NHL level proves they very well know how to play hockey.

As for Colborne playing on the 4th line....Where do we slip him in and who do we drop back to the 4th line? Do we move Komarov back? McClement? I think both guys bring a heck of a lot more to the table than Colborne at this point and right now, it's not about trying Colborne out on the 1st line..It's not about experimenting. It's about prepping this team to be the best it can be heading into the final 10 games of the season and hopefully the playoffs.

Two thumbs up!

Because Orr can fight that means he can play hockey?  It wouldn't be a penalty if it was something integral to the game.  Fighting is not playing hockey, it's fighting.

Fine, Orr can play hockey. But relative to other NHL players, he can't skate, shoot, pass, stick handle or defend.

What we can actually do something else. We can observe the game and collect statistics and conclude that Colton Orr is less good at hockey than other available players we have (or could have).  In particular, he's less good at doing the things that correlate with winning hockey games, as fighting isnt something that correlates with winning hockey games, even though it is something that sometimes happens on ice rinks in the down time in between periods when the game is played.

That's what we can do.

Because clearly I was comparing Orr to my own playing ability.  I'm quite content with my beer league hockey.  I'm quite content with the realization that I suck at hockey relative to guys who play Junior B hockey.  I'm also quite comfortable in my ability to state that Colton Orr would be better than me on the ice...by a lot.

However since I don't expect Colton Orr to be remotely good at my job, I wouldn't use him as a comparison for my competency.

There's a difference, though, between a guy like Orr and a guy like, say, Georges Laraque. Laraque was a pretty good junior player, scoring 20 goals in a season. As he progressed up from junior to the minors and the NHL the scoring dried up but he stuck in the NHL because he could fight.

Guys like Orr and Boogard though...they were fighters in junior, fighters in the minors...I'm not sure they're better hockey players than say, a good CIS player who never sniffed the pros.

Relative to other NHL players he's in the lower 3rd of players skill wise, you are correct. He CAN play hockey though. Not the greatest NHLer to put on blades...Not the worst either.

Like I said, as long as fighting is part of the game...He CAN play hockey..at an NHL level.

If he's not fighting, he's not a good NHL hockey player and there are many that can take his place.

It's a little puzzling that you can't separate his skill at punching people in the face from his skill at playing the game.
