D'Amigo traded to Columbus for Matt Frattin

I don't like this move.  D'Amigo's a good energy guy and penalty killer.  Frattin has 35 points in 126 games.  "Getting back on track" would imply that he was ever on track.  He had a couple of good stretches of games but he was never a guy who established himself as a good NHLer.

I don't get it either.  Frattin's older and could you have not just used a pick to get him?  I'd rather use a guy like D'Amigo.

EDIT: Should add that, having said that, it's pretty minor and inconsequential in the end.

Not a move that really moves the needle.  Leafs need to make this roster better, so far they haven't done much of anything.  Which at this point might not be a bad thing, some ridiculous coin being thrown around.

I agree, but I really liked D'Amigo, he was developed to play that role in my opinion. If you wanted Frattin back, surely we could have used another asset that wouldn't have stung.

I was disappointed to see Frattin leave a year ago, now I'm disappointed to lose D'Amigo.

Frattin, you get the chance to make up for that missed breakaway in Game 7 as my last memory of you.

I think Frattin added value beyond scoring though. He was pretty good on the forecheck.

Really, this just seems like the exchange of two different kinds of 4th line players.

I think Frattin has been getting more 3rd line ice-time though in the 13 minute range.  And for that he really can't score which to me is a problem.  He was decent on the fore-check, but as it stands now, he's a bad 3rd liner and our 4th line is likely to have one or two of McLaren/Orr on it.  That's pretty much going to invalidate any speed and attempt at taking advantage of his play.

I mean overall it isn't like they lost anything significant of value, but under the current circumstances I would rather have a guy who can penalty kill and at least at the AHL level has been shown to be able to play on the ice in the final minutes of a game.

I mean we just traded to acquire a guy who has now moved teams 3 times since June 23/13.  Frattin is fast, he definitely adds a bit of that element but he either plays above Clarkson, or his speed is pretty much useless on a line with Clarkson (3rd).

13 pts in 26 games with the Leafs was 'on track'
7 points in 44 with LA and Columbus was 'off track'.

There is not a team in the NHL that knows more about both of the players in this trade than Toronto. Safe to say from their standpoint, they made a good trade.

Of the 8 forwards who averaged over 1 minute on the PK last season, only JVR and Bozak will return. And both probably shouldn't be among the first 4 options considering they log big minutes at even-strength and on the powerplay.

I figured D'Amigo would be counted on to take a big PK role next season. Guess not.

Who cares... depressing how tied the Leafs seem to be to this current roster (due to contract and cap restraints).

I guess we can all hope for addition by subtraction?

You keep going back to this line of argument.  A team that tries to make the playoffs and keeps failing but thinks their moves are good isn't a great justification for the quality of their transactions.

Carolina retreads their players a lot too.  That doesn't make them a well managed franchise.

That's where I'm at too. I liked D'Amigo because I thought he'd be a great 4th liner that would hopefully replace one of the goons. I really don't know where Frattin fits in. I suppose he takes Raymond's spot? I think he'll have trouble matching Raymond's scoring.

When did I keep coming back to this? All I'm saying is the Leafs know D'Amigo and Frattin better than any team in the league. Who better to know exactly what they're giving up and getting back in this deal? They decided Frattin has a higher ceiling or is the better fit going forward.

this whole Free Agency Day has been one great big

Frattin has more skill, for sure, but how much upside does he have? He's only three months younger than Kessel and hasn't been able to crack an NHL roster yet.

D'Amigo was quick and knew his role. Frattin is an AHL player.

This team is going to be godawful.

That may be true, but I don't suspect this trade will have much bearing on that.

No doubt. But giving a guy like Frattin a job amounts to wasting a roster spot. This team doesn't have spots to waste.
