Draft Pick Watch - WE PICKED NYLANDER!!1!!

From Brian Lawton...
Rumours flying around the trade of the #1 overall pick. I am handicapping it 80% chance the pick @FlaPanthers is moved. #winnowmode is on

Btw Busta...2003 really wasn't all that long ago.

Considering this will only be the 53rd draft in NHL history, 11 years is a very significant amount of time. Also, it has only been traded on leading up to the draft or on draft day on 5 occasions, and only once (1975) to a team outside the top 3. Lawton is the only person I've seen who categorizes the possibility of the 1st overall pick being traded as good. Everyone else seems to believe it's unlikely.

My research team currently has the pick staying with Florida.  A 63% chance that happens.

They are the blust team money could buy

There are three ways this can go.

We move up, we move down or we keep the pick.

Being a Leaf's fan all my considerable life (considerable in age that is...) I admit I am intrigued by how the Leafs will
screw this one up.

I know it's not as exciting but I wouldn't mind seeing the Leafs move down. If you can get a mid-late 1st and a late 1st/early 2nd maybe they can come away with McCann and Ho-Sang? Too much of a pipe dream?

I would love to see the Leafs somehow acquire another first round pick. But, without a 2nd round pick, that's going to be a challenge.

You forgot about the possibility of trading the pick away completely.

I'd trade the 8th for a late 1st, 2nd and maybe a 5th and hope that Ho-Sang is still available when the Leafs pick.

I wouldn't. While I think Ho-Sang is going to be a good player, I think the players available to the Leafs at 8 will be better, and quality is more important than quantity.

But Ho Sang assured us that he is the best player, so... I kid.

If a team like Vancouver acquires this years top pick from FLA, I'd still offer FLA Phaneuf and/or Lupul for next years first rounder. (Unprotected that is).

For a team that wants to be competitive now, I'm not sure they would turn that down. That pick could end up being in the top 5, maybe even 1 or 2 in 2015.

I honestly believe the Leafs need, more than anything else, a superstar centre like McDavid to forge ahead and become a real contender in 3-5 years time. Picking in the bottom half of the top 10 every other season just isn't going to move the needle enough IMO.

Shanahan...We need a top 3 pick this year and top 2 next!!

You're right. My fragile mind never even broached the thought of the Leafs doing that.

If that happens we'd better see a trade that even Jerry Jones thinks is a no-brainer.

mirtle: Nonis expects Leafs to remain picking at eighth tomorrow.

While I think that is the most likely outcome, I'd chalk that comment up to a negotiation strategy.

I wouldn't call it a negotiation strategy, at all. It may be a pretty empty statement, but, at this point, all the other GMs are well aware of what his real intentions are, and a comment like this isn't going to change that. This is something that's more about tempering the expectations of the fans and the media than anything to do with negotiations.

Well....either way, and using your words....that comment is 'absolutely valueless'.
