Draft Pick Watch - WE PICKED NYLANDER!!1!!

Scoring a goal just happens.  You don't think during a game "oh I better lay off on this shot" or something.  IIRC, he received a feed on a PP and one timed it or something.  It's basically luck if that particular shot goes in or not.  It's not passion or lack thereof.  They're all competitive guys, that's why they've made it this far.

People ascribe way too much to individual plays.  Like Kessel, for instance - when he's going hot, he can take shots that go in for 5-7 games in a row, then when it goes cold those same types of shots won't go in for him.  It's unsustainable, but when they stop going in that's when you start to hear criticisms of him, despite the fact he plays pretty much the same exact game whether he's scoring or not.  It's just chance, in general.  But if it goes in he's somehow showing more leadership or something than if it doesn't go in.

I hear what you are saying and I know that you had my back with the Kessel jumping in the photo thing....but I gotta go with Michael on this one....Phaneuf is stupid and is capable of making enough bonehead plays to change the outcome of a game. (hope I am not too cynical  :( )

My guess, to ruin the chances of picking 7th or 8th, would be Clarkson scoring the winner tonight. That would be a fitting way to end his first season as a Leaf. He's already set the franchise back with his play and that f'ing contract. Might as well set us back further with a worse draft pick too.

Too cynical?

.....Clarkson from Phaneuf for the winner. :-X

Off topic I guess but I noticed that when Leafs called a timeout last game with the goalie out, Kessel was off to the left listening to the Asst Coach and he took his one glove off.  His wrist was significantly taped up. For a guy that lives on his wrist shot I'm sure that doesn't help.

As far as NHL blogs go, hockeywriters.com kinda sucks. But I've always liked their draft coverage. They compile a lot of what's been said about prospects from people more in the known and put them in a players profile. You can check out their full list of profiles here. Here are the profiles for the guys I mentioned earlier:

http://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-draft-war-room-nick-ritchie/
http://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-draft-war-room-jake-virtanen/
http://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-draft-war-room-brendan-perlini/
http://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-draft-war-room-kasperi-kapanen/
http://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-draft-war-room-william-nylander/
http://thehockeywriters.com/jared-mccann/
http://thehockeywriters.com/nikolaj-ehlers/
http://thehockeywriters.com/ivan-barbashev/

I think I'm on board with your bold statement. He seems to have the highest ceiling of the guys who could be available for when the Leafs pick.

Interesting how all over the map his ranking is.

Yeah. I think part of that is because he may also have the highest risk of not working out (at least, among the guys at the top of the draft). He seems like he might be a bit of a top 6 winger or nothing type, but, if he pans out, he could be a seriously good piece.

His stock seems to have risen, maybe his ranking reflects his size?  5'11", 162 or something.  Just watched a video of him, looks pretty dynamic.

Maybe. He has acknowledged that he needs to get bigger, so, hopefully he does without sacrificing his speed, hands, etc.

Im wondering if it would be worth it for the Leafs to try and trade up at this years draft. Maybe their 1st (along with say, Franson or Gunnarsson) to Edmonton for their 1st. Ekblad might be just the type of player the Leafs could use to solidify their blue line.

Phaneuf- Gardiner
Ekblad- Rielly
Percy- Finn
MacWilliam- Granberg

Gardiner or Rielly would be going back to Edmonton or...even Phaneuf if Edmonton's 1st was involved - esp
if #1 overall.

Well, I don't think Ekblad will go 1st overall, but I'd be prepared to offer Phaneuf in a package to acquire the number 2 pick in Ekblad. Heck, I'd even throw in Franson with Dion to make that deal happen. So the deal would be #8 (plus Phaneuf) for #2. Although a win tonight would take away our guaranteed 8th overall pick (7th if Vancouver win their final 2 games) At which point, we'll just have to win the damn lottery on Tuesday ;)

Glad to see the horror show didn't go full Kafka-Devereauxianesque... in fact, it looks like they finally figured out how to lose when it matters.

So it's the 8th overall pick, barring any unexpected results from the lottery on Tuesday. After a season that was derailed from a losing streak to finish, this really isn't too bad of a consolation prize.

Another top 10 pick, and continued development.... slowly but surely. My philosophy is, if they aren't ready to compete for the cup, than it's better to continue to draft at the highest possible positions until they are ready.

Something tells me this years draft won't be another quiet one for Nonis and company. Could be one where they make a big splash. Interesting week ahead...

Are any of these top 3 in the draft really significant players as compared to previous years?  It strikes me as this draft is pretty soft for impact players. Good players but meh compared to other years.

Is that the general consensus though? I haven't really heard that from the so called experts.
