Are you though? Obviously because of his age/potential you're expecting and hoping he'd improve but it's not like his existing production is all that far off from what would earn him that kind of deal if he were a UFA.

Well, Nylander has already bested Kane's top point producing season twice - in only two seasons in the league - with similar goal production to what you can reasonably expect from Kane. So, yeah, I'd be pretty comfortable giving this contract to him.

At 7 million I'm hoping he turns into a 30 goal scorer, yeah.

That's sort of my point. Regardless of what he gets paid we'd want him to improve but honestly right now I think the difference between him scoring 30 and where he is now is less about him getting better as a scorer and more about him just developing enough as a player that the coach is comfortable playing him for more than 16 minutes a night.
