Game Notes

CGY
?Markstrom (13-14-2, 2.91 GAA, .901 Sv%) will likely start for the Flames
?Calgary made a couple of minor trades at/around the deadline, selling off Sam Bennett for a couple of assets and of course trading Rittich to the Leafs. It wasn't exactly a full teardown so I'm sure they still have their eyes on the playoffs, especially with Montreal's struggles. They are quite a bit behind though: 8 points back with Montreal having 3 games in hand.
?The Flames beat the Oilers in their last game but were 1-8 in their previous 9 before that

TOR
?Rittich (4-7-1, 2.90 GAA, .904 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?Big Save Dave is expected to arrive in Toronto today and if all is well with him there's a chance he gets his first start in a Leafs uniform against his former team. If he goes don't be surprised if Campbell is given the night off entirely and doesn't dress
?The line-up blender was out in full force yesterday so who plays where is a bit TBD at the moment. With the trade deadline behind the team and some cap space available there's also a chance we start to see some players rotated in and out of the line-up. Or not. Also TBD

Injuries

Code:

?Frederik Andersen - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Riley Nash - Knee - Injured Reserve
?William Nylander - COVID Protocol - Out
?Ben Hutton - COVID Protocol - Out
?Nick Foligno - COVID Protocol - Out

Any word on when Foligno is arriving in Canada.  His quarantine doesn't start until he gets into the country and I haven't heard anything about when he is expected to arrive in Toronto.

What's to stop certain Flames players from dosing Rittich with laxatives on the flight over?

I keep forgetting we're getting an Amazon doc out of this season. They're definitely getting some good content (with hopefully a long and good ending).

So, the eternal question in this situation.  Is it smart to play the goalie against his old team because he knows the shooters? Or not, because the shooters know the goalie.

Today he's supposed to arrive. Used yesterday to get every set up. Has to be tough leaving his young family behind.

I generally think the goalie has the advantage.

I don't think it really matters but we might find out tonight lol.

One thing to keep in mind is both Nick and his wife call Sudbury home during the off season. If not for the current numbers Ontario was putting up, I'm sure they'd be on their way back to Sudbury as well.

It's not a significant advantage, I agree. Comes into play a little more in the shootout than during actual hockey.

And its still a major hassle crossing the border, now they are making Nexus holders file ArriveCan electronic documents before you make your crossing.  I have some friends driving back from Arizona next week and they are trying to figure out where to get a Covid test on the way back to satisfy the 72 hour protocol in place.

Rittich confirmed to start tonight.

And Campbell is backing up, which is a good sign that there isn't any lingering issues there right now.

Sabourin is playing tonight?  Seriously?  We don?t have anyone else deserving of a cup of coffee?  Spezza gets the night off and Thornton up to the second line.

I get some of this is line blenderinf biding time for the playoffs but I think Thornton should be getting a night off soon.  Too many ineffective games in a row
