So what do you want Komarov to do in that situation. Oh I better slow down here Gaudreau has the puck or maybe I should just skate by him and ignore him. He skated towards Gaudreau who had the puck and after he passes it Komarov hits him. It's hockey. Plus I agree it looks worse because he's a small player.

I'm not saying Komarov should have necessarily done any different. Sometimes, a penalty is the right play. That doesn't mean it's not potentially a penalty. Komarov has to make that hit, no question. Doesn't change the fact that he could have been called for charging.

How far he traveled after the pass isn't the issue. It's how far he traveled in total, and it was well more than 10 feet. It was from the goal line to above the face-off circle. Also, the fact that he didn't go out of his way to make the hit doesn't change things, either. He traveled a significant distance to deliver a violent hit. That checks all the boxes necessary to justify a charging penalty. The refs decided not to assess one, and that's their decision, but it absolutely qualified for one.

I don't think it did. He was killing a penalty, and of course was on his way back up toward his zone to defend with the flames having possession. The key is that he doesn't go out of his way to make the hit, not that he "travelled a significant distance". Coming back up ice from deep in the offensive zone is irrelevant in assessing a charge in this case.

What a draft choice Marner has become.Hunter was convinced on him and what a player. The Leafs new Dave Keon.

The rule as it is written specifically cites distance traveled as a factor, not whether or not a player went out of their way. In fact, distance traveled is the defining factor.

Distance travelled is only a consideration in the speed generated in delivering the hit, and is incredibly arbitrary regardless. Its the change in line that flags the official to whether it was a hockey play or headhunting, and that's where the spirit of the rule comes in. Komorov actually scrubs speed off before contact, if you look at the hit in slow motion in the link. It was completely clean.

Man, Brian Elliott really isn't good huh.

I'm surprised anyone is actually surprised. He's playing roughly as well as he did before he got to St Louis and got to play for a coach that employs one of the toughest defensive systems in the league. He was heavily insulated in St Louis.

Doesn't seem to be insulating Jake Allen quite so effectively this year.

Yeah, but that also seems to sort of be a trend with Hitchcock's teams. Eventually, for whatever reason, things break down, and his goaltending doesn't perform at the level it has in the past, and, then, he gets let go. Though, in the case of Allen, I wonder if it's just a youngish/inexperienced goalie not ready to take the reins without a quality backup as a safety net. I mean, he only had 89 career starts heading into this season. He probably still needs a veteran backup to help mentor him a little.

Real classy Calgary. Bennett slewfoot on Carrick with three minutes to go and Tkatchuk slewfoot on Marincin with ONE SECOND left. That one should have discipline. You can see he tries three times and succeeds on the third. Neither of them was called. Looks like Marincin might be out again.

He kicks his leg on the last one. Ohh that makes my blood boil. Marincin's right ankle and knee crumple as he goes down hard on that leg. One second left in the game. And we don't play Calgary again this year right? Coward.
