Flames sign O'Rielly to offer sheet.

I'm a little surprised. If you were willing to give the guy that money why not just do it?

I don't think they wanted to, but, when push came to shove, they decided he was more valuable to them than the draft picks. I think if the return was better than a 1st and a 3rd, they might have thought differently.

I don't doubt that they wanted him signed to less it strikes me as a pretty destructive game of chicken that could throw off your relationship with the player and maybe mess up your team's start to the season over a number that, push comes to shove, you were willing to meet anyway.

Frankly, I'm just glad this whole sage is over for at least the next few months. Also, for selfish reasons, I'm glad Stajan gets to stay as the 1st line centre in Calgary, since I just picked him up for my injury depleted fantasy team.

I want to pick up O'Reilly but I'm not sure when he'll suit up. Anyone have any idea?

This may be on the extreme side, but O'Reilly's offer sheet being matched and the same Avs team coming back to beat the Flames last night might end up being one of the best things to happen to the Flames this season.

While they miss out on a player they were hoping to build around, they get to keep their 1st in a deep draft, and it just may be reason enough to finally start the long-awaited rebuild.

That's assuming they decide to keep their first this year and not trade it away in some "draft shmaft" attempt to squeeze into the playoffs again this year.

I wonder if Nonis could fleece them of their 1st somehow. It would be nice for the Leafs to have a high 1st AND make the playoffs. :)

Oh to dream.

I still don't understand why Colorado matched.  I thought they didn't want to go that high on salary, and they could have had a high draft pick from Calgary.  Flames are currently tied for 5th worst in the league, a point behind a top 3 pick.

Interesting?

Jay Feaster might consider sending Greg Sherman a thank-you note. Or perhaps a fine bottle of wine.

The general manager of the Colorado Avalanche appears to have inadvertently done the Calgary Flames a big favour by choosing to match the offer sheet signed by 22-year-old centre Ryan O?Reilly on Thursday.

In a bizarre twist to an already unusual story, Sportsnet.ca has discovered that the Flames were not only in danger of losing 2013 first- and third-round draft picks as compensation if the Avs hadn?t matched the O?Reilly contract, but they also would likely have had to surrender the player before ever getting him in uniform.

That?s because O?Reilly would have needed to clear waivers before joining the team?s roster.

The unsigned forward spent part of the NHL lockout playing with his brother, Cal, for Magnitogorsk in Russia. According to Metallurg coach Paul Maurice and KHL spokesman Shawn McBride, he appeared in games on Jan. 21 and Jan. 23 ? both after the shortened NHL schedule was back underway ? which meant that waivers were required before O?Reilly could return to the NHL as a free agent midway through the season.

The origin of the rule goes back to Finnish defenceman Reijo Ruotsalainen, who frequently bounced between Europe and the NHL in the 1980s, once joining the Edmonton Oilers just in time to win the Stanley Cup.

More recently, Evgeni Nabokov, Kyle Wellwood and Marek Svatos have all signed with NHL teams upon returning to North America and then found themselves suiting up elsewhere after being immediately picked off the waiver wire.

The most interesting part of O?Reilly?s case is that the NHL didn?t believe he had played in Russia after the start of its season, according to a source. That detail had apparently slipped through the cracks ? understandable given all of the work being done to get the league up and running after the lockout.

However, it could have ended up being an awfully important detail to overlook.

They'd rather have him when push comes to shove than the uncertainty of a new draft pick?

That certainly is an interesting little wrinkle - though, I feel like I recall reading near the end of the lockout that new CBA did away with this rule. Or, maybe, that was just part of one of the PA's proposals.

Yeah I was curious if anyone here knew if the new CBA continued that or not, as the article doesn't go into it at all.  I guess no one outside of the league really knows that much yet.

EDIT: And did the rule apply to RFA's the same as UFA's?

If it does, I imagine it would apply to him rejoining the Avs as well. Until things are cleared up, I doubt we see him on NHL ice.

From yesterday's CBC article on COL matching:

"O'Reilly will travel to Denver for a physical and if everything checks out, he will join the Avalanche on their three-game road trip starting Sunday in Columbus."

It's still unknown when he will actually hit the ice for a game, but I would guess it will be within a few days of joining the team. He played in Russia during the lockout, so I would imagine he is in reasonable game shape.

No waivers.

Are you sure about that?

This is from some random person replying to Chris Johnston on twitter, so it's not confirmed by any amount:

This is not true, read the 25 page CBA information document released in January. Playing overseas waiver rule was modified.

Looks like Johnston's wrong on this: http://t.co/NwVatfk0an

Wouldn't this apply to Colorado signing and bringing him in now?

All that really clears up for me is that waivers don't apply to him re-joining the Avs. Would an offer sheet be considered a trade? Because, if not, from what I read there, waivers could still apply.

Eklund does many things, but, he doesn't make up quotes and attribute them to real people.
