Flyers @ Leafs - Feb. 26th, 7:30pm - TSN, TSN 1050

I say next year they start putting A's on the kids, like Kadri, Reilly, or Gardiner.  Not suggesting all 3 three of them but at least put an A on someone who is going to be part of the new core.

I'm sure I'll get flak for saying this, but man, I really didn't notice Phaneuf was gone and is it bad to say I really don't care to see him back?

I hope his return doesn't stunt the progress Rielly and Gardiner were making in his absence.

I think his shot was missed a bit on the powerplay, or even just the threat of his shot. But for the most part the Gardiner-Franson pairing filled in nicely for him. I haven't really watched the game much since the Franson trade so I can't comment on how they've looked then.

Phaneuf is a good defenseman, and none of the guys are ready to step in 23-28 minutes a game on a consistent basis.

I'm of the opinion that the Leafs are going to need a steady presence back there through a rebuild, so I'm not convinced that moving Phaneuf is a priority.

I think Polak or even Robidas could serve that role.

They can't do the minutes.  Playing consistently 20+ minutes a night is a not a common NHL player strength.  It's apparently a pretty tough thing to do from a mental and physical perspective.  Most NHLers get pretty mistake prone (cue Phaneuf jokes) with that kind of toll on the brain and body.

That's why the big minute munchers of the league get the big bucks, even if they don't put up big point totals.

Yeah, gotta believe that if they can get a good return for Phaneuf, he goes. Other than the PP, I haven't noticed whole lot of difference with him out of the lineup. I don't think he's worth the cost of that contract and don't think he's captain material.

Who would you slap a 'C' on with this current roster?

Zach Sill, obviously.

That's why I think the answer to your question is that if you trade Phaneuf you spread out the minutes so that nobody has to play 25 or so a night. There are 100+ defensemen in the league playing 20+ minutes a night and while I'm sure you could point to a couple of them and say that it makes them "mistake prone" or that they're not doing it at a super high level that's really not a consideration for a rebuilding team.

Well, first of all I don't necessarily agree, and second, even if I did the obvious answer is neither can Phaneuf ... effectively.

The last thing I would do is put a letter on any of the young guys, especially with how bad this team is going to be the next few years.  The Leafs are going to need some vets around to dress and help guide young players, and that's likely where the letters go.

It's Christmas in February!!!

This is the best year of the Goat/Sheep ever.

(although looking back on it the Leafs also traded for Gilmour and won their last Stanley Cup in years of the Goat/Sheep so maybe a 3rd place but still!)

Doesn't seem that long ago that leafs/flyers meant a good hard game that was a pleasure to watch.  Holmgren hurt the flyers, not sure why Leafs are also going in the wrong direction.

See that, other teams? Phil Kessel scores goals that very few players in the league can. Certainly not crummy 1st round picks.

Phaneuf took a shot off the knee and went to the dressing room.

Bernier keeping the Leafs in this game.

The PK looks a lot worse without Winnik out there.
