I read somewhere yesterday that if the Leafs went pointless in their last five games, they had greater than a 94% chance of making the playoffs. Their overall chances of making the playoffs continue at greater than 99.5%.

So the remaining battle, aside from the obvious desire to clinch a spot, is about position. Currently, they're 4 pts behind the Bruins and Habs. With the loss to the Caps and the results of other recent games, they're down to a 16% chance of winning home ice from 27%. If they're going to move up, they have to rack up some points.

In the standings thread, we've been monitoring the magic numbers for the Leafs against various teams. The magic number for the Leafs vs the Islanders is 7. Tonight struck me as a little unusual because a regulation win over the Islanders would knock 5 off that number - it's like a 5 point game: 2 for the Leafs points won, 2 for the Islanders points lost and 1 more point because it would clinch the tiebreaker between the Leafs and Islanders. I can't recall seeing that very often though maybe it's because I wasn't looking closely before (and it's been a while since the Leafs were in this position ...).

The Leafs can clinch a playoff spot tonight, comsuming the 4 magic numbers between them clinching over the Jets, in two scenarios:
1. Win 2 points while Winnipeg gets no points against visiting Carolina
2. Win in regulation or overtime while Winnipeg loses in a shootout or overtime because that would clinch the ROW tiebreaker over Winnipeg and gobble up the last of the 4 magic numbers that separate the Leafs from clinching a playoff spot.

A regulation or overtime win also helps the Leafs improve their position on a tiebreaker with the Habs or the Bruins. Tampa visits the Habs tonight. A win by the Leafs and a regulation loss by the Habs pulls them to within 2 pts of the Habs and a ROW win by the Leafs would give the Leafs a solid advantage in the tiebreaker between the Habs & Leafs because the Leafs have already won the head-to-head points series and currently lead the Habs with 1 ROW.

Naturally, every game in a season counts. But with only five left, this is an important game that will factor significantly in where the Leafs finish in the standings this season. It's their second last home game. Hopefully, they make it count.

                                      Go Leafs Go !!!

Worth noting that the Leafs have a better home record than the Islanders, but the Islanders have a slightly better road record.

Both of these teams have proven the skeptics wrong, much to the delight of their respective fans.  Who would have thought anyone would have seen our Toronto Maple Leafs team 5th in the Eastern Conference standings, and who would have imagined the Islanders (cellar-dwellers at one point in the season) to be vying for the 7th spot in the Eastern playoff standings.  As both a Leafs & .Isles fan, I'm proud of both of these teams for their accomplishments thus far, at this point in the season.

The Islanders coach Jack Capuano and the Leafs Randy Carlyle should both be given credit for implementing a system that their teams have followed, leading to their respective successes.

Now, as CW menrioned earlier, the real test begins, what with just a scant few games left, for both teams to clinch and solidify their playoff berths.

The LeafsNation hopes it happens with these upcoming games, while the IslesNation hopes for a strong finish to the finale.

GO LEAFS GO!!!  &  Go Isles Go!!!  ;)

GO LEAFS GO!

That was an Isles team on the cusp of greatness, perhaps the tables are turned and it's the Leafs team that's on the cusp...ok I sound like nutman now.  ;)

Game 1 of 2002 ECQF between Toronto and the Islanders was 11 years ago today.

Hamilton, Colborne and McLaren appear the be the scratches today per Mark Masters.
So that would mean...

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Lupul-Kadri-Kulemin
MacArthur-Grabovski-Frattin
Orr-McClement-????

Who am I missing?  Or maybe we'd dress 7 defencemen?

EDIT:  It is Komarov, because I am an idiot.  :P

Was that the series where Sundin was hurt and Mogs scored the GWG in Game 7?  My memory is hazy.

Anyway, what cw said above.  The Isles are no gimme (as we've already seen) but this is an excellent chance to use home-ice energy to notch a win that either will clinch or makes it virtually impossible not to.  Then you can spend the rest of the games pushing for position -- or resting guys who may need it.

Big game.

I think it was Travis Green who scored the eventual GWG in game 7.

Hope Kadri gets it going again.  Him and Lupul had magic there for a bit, we need that scoring down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Could be -- I have a recollection of Mogs getting a game winner, maybe it was G6 to keep the series going....

EDIT: Nope, you were right, it was Green and then Mogs sealed it with an EN.  That's what I remember, leaping out of my chair when he scored at the end.

Carlyle says teams are adjusting to the Leafs PP and finding ways to shut it down.

Carlyle also was asked about team being outshot so often and said they chart where shots are coming from. Agreed it was somewhat of concern.

Gunnarsson won't play tonight. "He's improving," Carlyle said. Could play Saturday.

Looks like Frattin and MacArthur will draw back in while James Reimer gets the nod in goal. We should see Gardiner w/ Phaneuf again too.

James Reimer will start in goal against the Islanders. - TSN
