But to respond to your post directly, that period was hardly a case of "poor execution".  They weren't skating out there, similar to the way they haven't been skating early in many/all of the games this year.

Sure, but I'm not talking about just how they've looked tonight, but, how they've looked in front of Gustavsson since last season. They've consistently looked worse in front of him than they have in front of any of the other goalies that played for the Leafs in that span. That probably isn't a coincidence.

Ok. But he hasn't played since January, and other than that probably hasn't played regularly since before Christmas. So how many on the roster played in front of him? Hardly any of the bottom 6 forwards and half the defence?

Really? You don't see how poor execution could very easily be the result of not having confidence in your goalie and, therefore, being more conscious about not making mistakes, which, as we all know, often leads to making more mitakes? Really?

To be honest, I hear that and I think that, if true, it's more indicative of some serious problems with the rest of the team than with Gus.

While that might have been true the past few seasons, I think it's a little too early to be making that argument this year.  The way I see it, they weren't particularly worse in the first period tonight than they have been on previous nights.  But Boston is a better team than the others the Leafs have faced, so they've been able to capitalize.

I think McKenzie made a pretty good point re: trying to play Boston tough just now.

Agreed. Bad coaching decision.

Fighting fire with fire?

Usually leads to a bigger fire.

They play on ice, how bad could it be?

Edit: Oh wait, I'm watching the game. Pretty bad it seems.

5 alarm, I reckon.

I don't know. The players aren't robots. They can't just delete the memories of playing in front of him. New season or not, those memories are going to be effecting them on a subconscious, if not a conscious one.

I disagree. All it really tells me is that, like all other players, they're human. Lots of teams struggle in front of goalies they're not confident in and then turn around and play well in front of goalies they do have confidence in.
