Goaltending conundrum

The Leafs have got a back-to-back with Buffalo and Vancouver on Friday/Saturday.  Both pretty good opponents.  That'll be a good opportunity to play both goalies and see who plays better.  At that point, run with the guy who's "hot"...

What's Gus' wins-per-start?  Must be pretty favourable in comparison with other goaltenders.

Downright Raycroftian...but at this point, I like wins...also he's been playing well.  I hope he's starting.

Yeah, my crazy thinking is - if they're winning most of the time he starts, I'd like to see him start and see if that continues.

great game by reimer ...he didn't face many shots ...but sometimes those are harder ...hopefully that gives him some confidence moving forward...leafs desperately need to string some wins together and it just doesn't seem to be happing

Reimer was ready when he needed to be. *maybe* he could have tried to block that pass across the front of the net on the goal, but really I can't blame him for hoping Gardiner would take the man. Some tough stops after really not being busy for long stretches in the game.

Really nice to see James with 2 great starts in a row, against LA and Buffalo.  40+ saves each game, easily one of the stars of the game both times.

Hopefully he is rounding into form and we can expect these types of performances more often.

He's suddenly pushed his save % to .906 and finally moved ahead of Scrivens again for best on team.

I see the same thing, but the Leafs have to cut down on the shots against.

Yeah. He's certainly finding his old form now. I love how he jumps on the puck in his crease and just kills the play all the time. It seems subtle, but it takes the momentum away from the opposing team in the Leafs end.

Also many times where he'll save a shot with no rebound.  That's key.

For sure. Its the combination of making the save without giving up any rebounds, and his willingness to just kill the play that must frustrate the hell out of opposing forwards.

Stopping the rebounds is definitely the way in preventing potential goals scored against one.  Reimer's penchant
for smothering the puck and thus having prevented a rebound is a good sign the goaltender is on the alert and ahead (in anticipation) of the play.  Something that can't be said for some of the Leafs ex-goaltenders of the past (Raycroft, Toskala types).

Gustavvson also has a good glove but I noticed plenty of rebounds against him.  Reimer does it better, perhaps.

Honestly there was a point there I thought we should have been starting Gustavsson but over the past week or so Reimer has been excellent, hopefully he is back to mid season form after that injury.

It would be nice to see Gustavsson really roll the backup position though. Based on Gustavsson's recent play against non-Bruin teams I think he can finally blossom into a 1B backup, and that's nothing to be ashamed of in this league in this era.

G played great his last couple games (non-B teams), would be nice to see him get some starts. Felt like last 2 seasons with all his health issues the forwards and D had zero confidence in front if him, but they way he held us in some games without Reimer, looks like the whole team could win with him.

In the off-season, it seemed people only remembered Gus at his worst when everything seemed to be falling apart for the guy.  But if one thinks back before his struggles, he played pretty good and showed lots of promise.  My thinking was if the coaching staff smooths out his rough edges, the competition between him and Reimer would be allot closer then most people were thinking.  Heck Gus's save percentage is the same as Raycrofts, so he's good for at least 37 wins!  ;D

I read on twitter that Raycroft was going to be placed on waivers today.

How desperate are we?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Raycroft's current save percentage is slightly better now then when he got his 37 wins.  8)

Absolutely not.  His 37 wins were only due to the fact he almost played every game that season.  Despite the number of wins his GAA and SV both sucked.
