Hainsey to Leafs [2 years, $3.0mil AAV]

With Pittsburgh (likely) signing Hunwick, the teams basically swapped defencemen. Wonder how Matt's contract compares to this one.

2 yr. contract. More details. ..

Over the past 2 seasons Hainsey's most frequent defence partner has been Justin Faulk. I believe their Slavin-Pesce pairing did a lot of the heavy lifting there but that's still top-4 minutes. So if he's coming in here to play bottom pairing minutes + tons of PK it'll of course put him in a much easier/more suitable role.

This chart that herman posted in another thread the other day doesn't paint a great picture for Hainsey, at least in terms of neutral zone play:

With that said, he was playing top pairing minutes for the Stanley Cup champs.

That is disappointing.

Do note that that chart is just this past playoffs run. Sample size is smallish, and Hainsey was playing elevated on a new squad.

That being said, ugh. I hope a Swede overtakes him.

I don't mind it. He can play both sides of the ice, so a bit of a safety value on third pairing either way. Has decent size, good reputation and a solid, smart dressing room guy, and certainly stepped up when it counted last year. Plus he's been pretty durable over the past four years. Just wondering about the money side?

Ok -- didn't realize it was just playoffs. And Pittsburgh as a team got clobbered corsi-wise.

As long as the cap hit is low, commensurate with a 6th dman rate, I'll be fine. We need more NHL depth on D from someone cheap.

It'll start with a 3 I'm sure.

Hunwick signed for 2.25 in Pittsburgh... hainsey appears to be a downgrade in talent unfortunately.
