Murray on David Clarkson "We hope that he chooses us...he is one person we have targeted."

Just so we are clear:  Grabovski too expensive and not worth it.  Clarkson possibly a longer-term and more expensive contract.

Even if we ignore the rest of his career and just take the last season + 1/2 season he's a:
29G 16A 45P player.  That's going to blow up in the face of the team.

I will be shocked if Toronto native David Clarkson does not become a Maple Leaf today. Shocked #nhl #sens #leafs #battleofontario

Bruce Garrioch ‏@SunGarrioch 47m
@SunDoniB So will the Maple Leafs Talk is seven years at $5.5 million per-season will be on the table.

He was worth more than that last year and maybe the first half of this year but the rest of his career? Eh....

What? You think his career will decline starting next year? Or over a 7 year term? I wouldn't give him 7 years either, but I'd pay him 4-4.5 over 5 years.

No, I'm just unsure that how he played over the 100 games where he was a dangerous goalscorer(where he got lots of PP time with guys like Kovalchuk and Elias) is really indicative of how he'll play going forward.

Bruce Garrioch @SunGarrioch
Sources say Daniel Alfredsson has informed the Senators he will not be returning to Ottawa. He will sign with BOS or DET #Sens #ottnews

Oh okay. Well, I have this hunch that on the Leafs team, who have no problems putting the puck in the net, he could keep that pace up. Maybe I'm wrong..

Wow, things are getting interesting. Gonna be a LOT going on today! There already is!

I'm kinda hoping Alfie goes to Boston - that would probably irk sens fans more (even though Detroit will now be in the same division).

Garrioch says they gave him a "Blank Cheque" and he decided to move on.

He might. It just strikes me as an expensive gamble and with no more compliance buyouts I'm jumpy at the moment.

A 7 year deal is nuts for a physical player like Clarkson because he won't be able to do it effectively for 7 more years. He'll do well to make 4.

I'd rather, in the wake of Bozak/Grabbo leaving,  they get the best center they can and add a defensive dman for a good cap pop.

They can only afford two $4-5 mil UFAs - and that's barely - maybe causing more problems re-signing Kessel, etc next year. Anything beyond that and roster bodies taking millions in cap space have to move.

I'm going to down six of these in the next half-hour and hope for the best.

With reason, what did Burke used to say? Lots of mistakes are going to happen today.

Ratboy.  Krusty.  The Diet Coke of Leaders.

Somehow this seems like the end of an (amusing) era.

It seems too quiet on the Leafs front. I kind of expect something to happen nobody expects. That always happens. Looking forward to it.

This is true, every season I expect big things and then I get the same speech about "more mistakes are made on free agency day then all other days combined".  Nonis is trying to put his stamp on the team, let's see if he has cojones to pull off a major deal or signing.

I see it the exact opposite way. On a team like the Leafs that already has a number of quality goal scorers, someone like Clarkson won't get the puck as much or be put in as many quality offensive situations.

I've been drinking those all summer. They're flat-out terrific.

Unless they play him on the 2nd line and move Kulemin to the third, which I think will happen.

If Nonis overpays for Clarkson I'll revise my name-calling so that he's not just a Grabbo-specific Situational Idiot but an All-Purpose Idiot.

On the other hand, if he can land Ference or Scuderi I'll light a votive candle for him down at St. Mary Queen of the Universe.
