Game Notes

NYI
?Thomas Greiss (10-6-2, 3.89 GAA, .886 Sv%) will likely start for the Islanders
?The Islanders played last night against Florida, losing 4-1 and being outshot 40-33
?New York is getting MVP-like seasons out of almost their entire top line. Tavares is 5th in the league in points with 57 in 51 games. Josh Bailey is actually scoring at an even higher rate with 55 points in 47 games, he recently returned from a lower-body injury. And Anders Lee is tied for 2nd in the league in goals with 27 in 51 games
?Their second line, AKA the line that Chiarelli built, is doing very well too. Mathew Barzal has 51 points in 51 games, while Jordan Eberle is on pace to score 62 points
?Scoring goals clearly isn't a problem for New York, but keeping them out is. They're dead last in GA/GP and have the 2nd worst PK% in the league. Because of that they are in a dog-fight for the final wild card spot in the East. Just 2 points separates the Flyers, Rangers, Islanders, and Hurricanes. Philly currently occupies that final spot

TOR
?Andersen (24-14-4, 2.68 GAA, .920 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?Nikita Zaitsev looks like he's ready to return to the line-up. He missed the past 17 games with a broken foot. Polak is expected to be a healthy scratch with his return
?Based on the lines at practice yesterday, it seems like the road units from last week are still intact. That means Marner with Kadri, Komarov on the 4th line, and Martin in the press box. Huzzah!

Injuries

?Shane Prince - Upper Body - Injured Reserve
?Andrew Ladd - Upper Body - Injured Reserve
?Johnny Boychuk - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Calvin de Haan - Shoulder - Injured Reserve
?Nikolay Kulemin - Shoulder - Injured Reserve
Code:

?Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
?Joffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely
?Nikita Soshnikov - Groin - Injured Reserve
?Morgan Rielly - Arm - Injured Reserve
?Nikita Zaitsev - Lower Body - Probable Wednesday

Ten years ago, Paul Ranger was a legitimate top-4 defencemen with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Then, when he was 25 years old, he left the team at the beginning of the 2009-10 season for personal reasons and nobody knew why. In 2012 he signed a minor-league deal with the Marlies and had a successful return to professional hockey despite taking 3 seasons off. He played 53 games with the Leafs the season after that in his return to the NHL. After one more season in hockey in Switzerland he finally ended his hockey playing career.

Still, he never spoke about his reasons for leaving the hockey world in 2009. Last week it was revealed that he was battling with depression during that time. And with today being Bell Let's Talk day TSN released this piece where Darren Dreger sits down with Paul to discuss what he went through:

I have a solution for Marner's minor problem.

Is Polak really a scratch or are you just hoping for the best?

Zaitsev is good to go.

Man I hope those D combos are for real.  Once Rielly gets back it can be:

Gardiner-Hainsey
Rielly-Zaitsev
Dermott-Carrick

Borgman
Polak

Barzal.  Calder?

Barzal and Boeser are both outscoring Matthews and Laine from their rookie seasons, yet nobody talks about them the way last years rookies were talked about.

Matthews and Laine were true freshmen, these guys are 2 years removed from their draft.  Not to undermined what they are doing...but that's a big deal

I'm with you on Barzal, but the Boeser love from the ASG was a pretty substantial.

Having said that, those 2 are great players.  Horvat and Boeser is a pretty nice combo for the Canucks to work with...off topic, I know.

Just to echo the general thread,

Polak is on the IR with a viral infection
Hainsey is a game time decision with an illness
Justin Holl (RHD) has been called up on an emergency basis

Holl is coming off his first AHL All-Star appearance, and is having a very nice season for what initially looked like a random pick-up by Dubas.

With Greiss' GAA and the possibility that Holl slots in as our #1D tonight, we could see a double double-digit game.  8) :o :o :o :P :-*

Hainsey is put with the flu. I'm interested to see what Holl can bring, he's played well for the Marlies this year.

Should be a few goals scored this game.

I've always wondered whether Holl had any NHL potential (thought he looked OK in some preseason games) but man...that's kind of a scary defense.

Lol Nylander stick handling right in front of Andersen with Bozak and JvR as support was super scary.
