Joffrey Lupul

He's almost approaching Doug Gilmour '93 and Gary Roberts '02 level.  If he can somehow lift this team to playoff success, he'll join that elite company.

Anything resembling a repeat of last seasons performance could certainly secure face of the franchise status for Lupul. He has shown himself to be by far the most complete forward on the team and easily a top 10, even top 5 NHL player playing at his best.

Come on...

;D

He might not even be the most complete player on the top line.

I love the guy, but come on.

Glad to have somewhat been proven right here, and I'm still being generous.

The guy is pulling off the hockey equivalent of Kobe Bryant's game right now. Absolute game breaker. Its a thing of beauty to watch, especially it being a Leaf.

I would say the "face of the franchise" is a tie between Kadri and Lupul, with Kessel and Phaneuf still suggesting they aren't to be forgotten just yet.

edit: the playoffs are usually when the true best of the team step forward. we will know then.

Jesus Christ (Easter Monday reference), the guy can't even stay off the IR for a season.

Let's tone down the rhetoric.

I love Lupul but I agree with you. As awesome as he has been, people are forgetting how much he has been injured. I heard the other day he's missed something like 150 games over the last 5 seasons.

Before anointing him Captain or the face of the franchise, I would want to see him put up consecutive 75+ game seasons.

It is extremely rare for a guy with such a lengthy injury history to suddenly become an "ironman" in his 30s. I'm sure someone could dig up a name or two but for each one of those I will show you 100 guys where the injuries kept coming. That's just the way it is more often than not.

I truly hope Lupul becomes one of those exceptions.

Does this season's injury really make him less durable or make him injury-prone? Anyone can get hit by a slapshot. It's not the same as having wonky knees or a bad back.

He (and others) have commented on how much better in shape and how much better at taking care of himself he had to become in order to come back from that long time off due to the blood infections he had.  I wouldn't be surprised if his commitment to being in great shape results in less time missed.

150 games less wear and tear!!

Seriously though, I'm not sure the reasoning behind needing two 75+ seasons to anoint him the leader. He's good with the media and fans, passionate while on the ice, and clearly one of the more talented players on the team.

Wendel Clark is a Saint...how dare you speak disparagingly of him.

Didn't you see his wicked Harlem Shake video?  Flawless.

You should probably be banned for a few days or something.

The people need a Sundin-like figure.  They just need it.
