Kessel signs long term extension (8 yrs, 64M, 8M AAV)

Sportsnet.ca reporting that Kessel and the Leafs are talking extension tonight prior to tomorrow's opener.

I know it's going to be for big dough, and he's thought of as too one-dimensional but he's OUR superstar so this would make me happy.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Getting a sense Phil Kessel's contract extension in TOR could get done as early as Tues. Leafs and Kessel's agents working towards that.

TSNBobMcKenzie: But no one has confirmed it's done yet. So we'll see. If it's done, I would expect it'll be $8M per year, give or take $500K, for 7 or 8 yrs

Dreger....

Neither Leafs nor Newport Sports (Kessel's agent) is commenting on extension speculation, however, sense is there will be news tomorrow.

This is great. The organization would be taking two giant steps back if Kessel walks next summer. Realistically, it shouldn't be that difficult of a contract to work out. Like Bob says, 7 or 8 years for about $8mil is the market price. If Phil wants to stay and the Leafs are willing to pay him, there's absolutely no reason a contract should take long to finalize.

Hoping to wake up and hear Kessel has signed an extension. 8 years would be perfect, amount I'd like to see is 8.1 mil per year , similar to his jersey number haha

TSNBobMcKenzie: TOR knew Kessel's statistical history/productivity would mean he'd be looking for as much as $8.5M AAV or Claude Giroux $8.275M territory.

TSNBobMcKenzie: TOR first wanted to determine, $ aside, how eager Kessel was to be a Leaf. If he did, sense was $ would sort itself out quickly. Stay tuned.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Bottom line is IF TOR wants to re-sign Kessel, Leafs know price of poker is somewhere between $7.5M and $8.5M/year. Or he goes UFA.

I would like that too.

NHL players are a really superstitious bunch, so it wouldn't even surprise me if he went with that. His buddy Bozak did the same thing at 4.2, as did Crosby and Karlsson.

Too bad he's not wearing 18....

Next CBA owners will go after the large sweater numbers....

Everyone loves Kessel at around 8 mil for 8 years and why not? That said, it's in my nature to be extremely nervous about that kind of commitment.

It's worth noting that I supported the Clarkson signing too so in for a pinch... I guess.

Seems legit.

CTVLondon.  Yeah, they should stick airing 30 seconds of local news and then using 45 minutes of stock stories from the US like they usually do.

No.... I know. I'm just saying that it would be impossible for me to turn my nose up at Kessel's (potential) deal when I backed Clarkson's - all I'm saying.

Oh I was just saying it would seem that you should be nervous about the Clarkson signing rather than this supposed Kessel signing.

Yeah. If these guys are right, they beat every other source by at least two hours. That would be enough for me to hit follow on twitter. I can't see it.

Honestly, even if they are right, it's more like an Eklund kind of right. They saw the work from McKenzie and Dreger last night and just figured they'd say it's a done deal because it probably is.

@DarrenDreger: Kessel deal is 8 years, aprox $8 mil per. Believed to include ltd no-trade. It's not complete..not signed, but announcement expected today.

Getting closer!!
