Kessel signs long term extension (8 yrs, 64M, 8M AAV)

So, on a related note, can we carry a ~8 mil. Kessel and a Phaneuf at or above 6.5 mil? One has to think that would be pretty tough going forward....

Kessel extension should be completed this morning. Talks intensified this wknd. Phaneuf negotiations will soon become priority.

Dreger says that Phaneuf negotiations will become a priority after the Kessel deal is done, which should be this morning.

Those are the prices you pay for a franchise scoring forward and a legitimate top pairing defenceman. If we can't afford those rates because our cap space is allocated elsewhere then our GM doesn't have his priorities straight.

But I do think it will fit, things are just going to be very tight next summer and we'll see a cap casualty or two because of it.

Well, we have 2.5 million in dead space.  Add that to Kessel's current salary and you get approx 8 million.

But you have to look at the roster as a whole and then guess at the cap increase.

So after this year, doesn't tucker and co. finally come off the books? So, really it'll just be Liles contract creating the dead cap space. Hopefully he can be traded at some point this season, with the Leafs retaining some salary.

Only two players have finished top-10 in league scoring in each of the past two seasons: Steven Stamkos and Phil Kessel.

I still get the feeling that Phaneuf comes in at the same or a bit lower of an AAV.

If he does, I think he'd be doing us a favour. I'm pretty comfortable saying at least one team would pay him more than 6.5 as a UFA.

Came together pretty quickly for a guy who, so I read numerous times, had given no indication of wanting to stay in Toronto and wanted to be out of the spotlight (I know, I know $8 million reasons to stay).

Imagine, in 3 more years, Both will be on the same team.  :)

I doubt Phaneuf comes in lower. Maybe the same cap hit.

Yeah, I'd be pretty happy for just the same. He could definitely get over $6.5mil on the open market. I think he would be by far the best defenceman on the market.

Not that I have a ton of hope for this but I wonder if Phaneuf, given his position as Captain and because of all of the salary-related criticism he's faced as a Leaf, would be inclined to take a relatively less lucrative deal and save himself some of that headache. I don't think he's got an obligation to do it but considering the mixed feelings many still have on his Captaincy, I could see it being a decision he'd consider.

This is a more eloquent and explanatory way of expressing my thoughts, but there is so many variables to that, that I just called it a hunch.

I also think he is very comfortable in Toronto, his wife could most likely stick around more often, being that Toronto is kind of the Canadian hub of the movie industry. I know it gets used a lot, but I also believe for Phaneuf, he would see an increase in sponsor revenue playing for the Leafs IMO. That has to mean something in the grand scheme of things, no?
