Kings forgo buyout, terminate Richards' contract

I hope this doesn't spiral to Fogarty levels.  If its an addiction problem though the league has avenues for that.  Also didn't the Lightning have to buy out Malone's contract?

Found this on another board:

@friesensunmedia: Sources tell Wpg Sun Mike Richards subject of OxyContin investigation. Held at least 4 hrs at Emerson border crossing in Manitoba, June 17.

@friesensunmedia: Source says Mike Richards was formally arrested at border crossing, not merely detained for questioning. Investigation now at two-week mark.

Wait a minute. They didnt terminate Voynov but they are for a guy with an addiction problem? I mean unless he was dealing isn't there redress under the CBA?

I think that's where the Kings are going to get in to trouble.  Voynov still has a contract.

I wonder if its actually "OxyContin". That might be more serious as it has been removed from the Canadian market.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stoll blamed the mess he got into on Richards.  Whether it looks like or not, have to think Richards was intentionally targeted at the border.  My hunch is Richards went beyond his own personal use and was supplying others.  Think he might of had an amount which is going to get him into serious trouble.  Will have to wait and see, but it's kind of sad teams know of players doing wrong and look the other way because these players are huge assets to them.

Well, they may feel Voynov may have a case, since his wife did not want to press charges - but they have suspended him without pay, so, while he still has a contract, he's not seeing any of the cash.

Wow, that would definitely make it serious.

It certainly isn't a good thing, but honestly, do not get me started on how stupid the ban of Oxycontin was.    It just shifted the focus onto Fentanyl abuse and the con that OxyNeo can't be crushed when it certain can be crushed and melted if you do the right thing.  It reduces the amount of abuse but didn't really stop it in any way and if anything has made things slightly more dangerous as Fentanyl tea is far worse than Oxys were.

One discussion point going around was around border crossings and whether Richards may be facing a restriction on border travel as an underlying source of his "conduct" release.  Normally a team/league would advocate for a player to ensure that they can get around restrictions but LA certainly wouldn't be keen on making things work for Richards in this situation.

Voynov was still being paid during his league imposed suspension for domestic violence. He is now on a team suspension for injuring his achilles in a recreational activity and is not being paid by the team while he is injured. Make sense?

Paid or not his alleged offense is far worse than whatever offense is being speculated regarding Richards. It seems to me that anything short of supplying to others could arguably fall under the CBA drug provisions and if I had $29M at stake I for one would certainly argue it.

It doesn't fundamentally alter the point you make but it's 22 million in terms of actual money, 29 million in cap hit. Both, however, are relatively moot points as Richards would almost certainly have been bought out if this didn't come up. So the real numbers in both cases are considerably lower.
