Kovalchuk to Kings

Not that they really had the cap space to start with, but this will take them out of the running for Tavares if he hits the UFA market.

I'm not sure about that. Tavares seems like the kind of guy you make room for and the Kings do have deals they can move.

They'd need to be move $7-$9M to fit Tavares in and fill out their roster. It could be done, sure, but it would really take away their depth.

Take this with whatever grain of salt is required, considering the source, but John Shannon says the Kings have told him that they are not pursuing Tavares.

Maybe you forgot them because they weren't there very long.

But the LA Kings were a playoff team. 😳

Holy crap, you're right, they did make it.  Guess I should pay more attention.

Didn?t he retire with a lengthy piece of contract left? Didn?t Lou get away with it somehow too where nj was off the hook from that contract? Does someone remember the who story? How is he a ufa?

I?m just confused how this went down and how he can come back to the nhl.

I don't know the exact specifics but basically if you retire your contract comes off the books(unless you're hit with the recapture penalty). When you come back, you're a UFA. However to prevent abuses there's a certain amount of time you need to be "retired". Whatever that time is, Kovalchuk's hit it.

Basically any rule to prevent this would only apply to someone looking to playy in the KHL because nobody else would retire for a few years and forfeit huge amounts of money just to get out of a contract.

Thanks. I thought there was a rule about retiring before the age of 35 and the team would be on the hook for all or a large percentage of the contract.
