This is an interesting suggestion. Gilman was Vancouver's assistant GM back when they weren't a laughing stock and always seemed like a forward-thinking executive. He apparently interviewed and then turned down the GM job in Carolina for all the obvious reasons. He also did some work with Vegas early on, helping them with their strategy for the expansion draft.

Nicely done, Draglikepull and Carlton.

Noice!

I'm very excited about this hire. There was an Athletic interview with Gilman a little awhile ago that was very good. He spoke a little about how in Vancouver it was almost his job to disagree with Gillis (the GM). I think he'll fit in great to what we're building here.

If anyone wants to hear from him, he was on Craig Custance?s podcast The Full 60 on February 7th.

Oh thanks for the heads up. That one is buried in my queue at the moment.

This was that interview: https://theathletic.com/100862/2017/09/13/laurence-gilman-eager-to-get-back-into-nhl-but-waiting-for-right-gig/

Lots of good stuff in there.

So I get the sense that this essentially replaces all of Dubas' previous responsibilities. Hunter's role was sorta two-fold: AGM and Head Scout. Pridham's promotion will cover Hunter's AGM responsibilities, so we just need to hire or promote someone to head scout now.

edit: or as birky put it:

Hi everyone I know I'm doing a good job hiding it but I'm very excited about Dubas and this hire and the draft and this offseason.

As discussed in the Hunter thread, it looks like the AGM roles are:
Pridham: Numbers - Analysis (Cap strategy, probably R&D game strategy)
Gilman: People - Development (Marlies, player dev)

Gilman essentially replaces Dubas's old role, and Pridham although he's now AGM is still doing the same thing he was doing before.  So they still need a head scout role to be filled that replaces Hunter's old role.

It should be noted that Gilman integrated a lot of analytics into Vancouver, so taking on some of the R&D stuff is definitely within his wheelhouse (perhaps even moreso than Pridham). He was also a very well regarded capologist so he and Pridham can geek out about the CBA.

I think Pridham's role expands to beyond mere capology. With the way analytics has gone, the cap game is integral to player valuation, so I think it's a super easy fit to have him overseeing the numbers side of player eval across the league.

Dubas probably helms the scouting group, since he's setting the vision for how the team ought to play.

Basically there is buy-in up and down the FO group for what Dubas is doing (USE ALL THE DATA), but with different perspectives to hone in on stronger solutions.

I think you still need a head scout that all other scouts will report to who'll compile all the info and also use his own observations on player evaluation.  Dubas will have way too many other responsibilities to take that on as well I would imagine.  Head scout will report directly to Dubas.

This is a good summary of Gilman. He's got Dubas' analytics side, Pridham's capologist side, plus 20 years of NHL executive experience.

Technology is at the point where reports are not in paper/pen notebooks; I'm pretty certain I've seen some other teams with in-house scouting report intranet programs where they just punch in their ratings and notes. Dubas sets the parameters for which player profiles are interesting, and I'm sure he will make his regular trips to the rink to see for himself, but scouting is largely a data collection exercise. I don't think a drop-in replacement for Hunter is necessary.

I'd be very surprised if somebody wasn't named director of amateur scouting, even if it's just an in-house promotion. They don't need to rush and get somebody in to work on this years draft, but at some point in the offseason yeah.

Gilman, 53, has worked for the NHL since 2016 and helped create the rules for the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft.

;)  We love getting guys who helped write rules for the NHL so we can exploit those loopholes only they know about.  Pridham for the cap, now Gilman for the next expansion draft.
