Leafs announce extensions for Johnsson & Kapanen

Wonder why they waited a week to officially file the deals that McKenzie reported were essentially done

I think they were hoping for Marner to sign. Now maybe it's strategic to say to Marner this is all we have left in cap space and still need to sign 2 D men and another forward. Who knows?

Or maybe they're finally getting close on Marner and know they can move forward. Maybe finalize Marner deal and look to trade Zaitsev and Brown come Monday?

They probably only had the basics of the agreement in place over the weekend, and took their time to get all the details hammered out, knowing it would all be sorted before July 1.

Good points also. I suspect at least Brown is gone after the bonuses are paid. Brown is the easiest move. Hyman would be easy as well if they needed an extra million. Lots of options and should be very interesting come Monday.

I guess it really doesn't matter, but I don't think it would take them a week to finalize those details.  We see contracts signed and filed with the league on the same day each July 1st, I don't see why these 2 would be any different.  McKenzie tweeted something about a week ago saying he didn't expect the deals to be finalized until the Leafs had more clarity on their cap situation, so I hope it's good news on the Marner front.

I'm siding with you on this one! Hopefully Marner signs by Sunday.

A little surprised that Kapanen got the signing bonus treatment as well. The details for Johnsson aren't up yet.

Different sense of urgency. Kapanen and Johnsson might not have been in the city, but were expected to be later in the week, so they didn't feel the need to get things actually signed right away. Lots of reasons it could have taken a little longer to get something official.

Trade value incentive?  I mean they aren't expensive contracts but it also makes them lockout proof!

I suspect the lockout potential definitely had an impact. I also wonder if handing out a big chunk of money upfront helped the team negotiate down the cap hit a little.

True but you don't have to be in the city as Nylander proved Dec 1st.  I just think the timing is interesting going into the final weekend before July 1st.  I am crossing my fingers that Marner gets done tomorrow or Sunday.

If it ever comes to that, then yeah that could certainly make him more attractive. A big chunk of the total value of the deal gets paid off in that first signing bonus.

That's true, but when you don't have a rapidly approaching deadline, like Nylander did, and you're going to be in town soon any way, waiting a couple days doesn't have any real impact. I'm sure they wanted it done before July 1st, but, whether that was today or this past weekend didn't really matter to them.

They waited just to mess with you.
