Leafs for sale (cont'd).....

Yes, there will be a boost in asset value from the synergy of melding these sports properties with broadcasting companies.  But the bottom line for me is that these businessmen feel that they have not milked enough money from this cash cow and today, they're effectively adding a media tit to siphon more of that money ... largely from the fans of their teams. I don't know how else to see it.

The only thing I really want to know is, who is Burke's new boss and what will this mean to Burke and the Leafs. I don't know anything about John Tory, but if he is the new boss I suppose he could be at the presser this morning.

I don't know about you guys but I'm pretty jazzed. My #1 complaint as a Leafs fan is that my following the team wasn't as seamlessly integrated across various media platforms as I'd like. Why, as a male in the coveted 18-34 demographic, I have a great deal of disposable income and I'm not entrenched in my brand loyalties. With any luck, not only will my access to the team be increased by slickly produced content that I can stream from anywhere but I can also receive important information from the team's corporate partners, alerting me to products that they've specifically tailored to my interests, as derived from a profile of my web usage.

The one thing I will say is that now that Bell/Rogers own LeafsTV/Raptors TV there is no excuse for their shoestring budget telecast.  Get some real cameras that don't make the ACC look like its being played in a snowstorm.

Part of the synergy will be overhead absorption between the two parties. Some of the folks at LeafsTV will probably hit the bricks. And they'll work on getting a better quality viewing product with professionals who do it every day.

Damien Cox called Henny a homer. I wonder if Damien's head will explode this morning knowing that his Sportsnet employer also owns a team he covers ...  :)

This is going to cost us fans in the end. When the only 2 super media companies in the country team up to buy the #1 sports team in the country, they want to make money. They would not only control ticket prices to all the live games, but also the price of admission to watch the games on TV. I don't like the sound of that one bit.

Burke probably has the boundaries of his autonomy covered in his contract.

Media oriented management probably like Burke because he's probably the most outspoken media draw as a GM in the league.

I suspect it will just come down to if the CEO and Burke get along or not.

From the Globe article:
The deal gives MLSE an equity value of roughly $1.66-billion, not including debt. Of that, Rogers and BCE are said to be paying about $1.33-billion for roughly an 80-per-cent stake.

At that price, MLSE has a total enterprise value of $2.1-billion, including debt.

In 2002, just before Stavro sold, MLSE was valued at roughly $1 billion. Since then, they've added assets: Leafs & Raptors TV, the Marlies relocation, Toronto FC & Arena Management business.

From the above, OTPP would continue to own about 16% of MLSE.
Tanenbaum 20+%
Bell & Rogers are apparently splitting the remaining (less than) 64%

The Globe has changed it's numbers on this deal:
BCE, Rogers strike deal for MLSE
Under the agreement to take up the stake held by the Ontario Teachers? Pension Plan, BCE and Rogers will together own 75 per cent of MLSE, the parent of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, the Toronto FC soccer club and other assets.

Larry Tanenbaum will boost his ownership in MLSE to 25 per cent from his current 20.5 per cent, the companies said, and will remain chairman of the sports empire.

OTPP is now being reported by the Globe as completely out.

Rogers 37.5%
BCE  37.5%
Tanenbaum 25%

So far, the PC has been awful from a fan perspective. Maybe with questions starting it will improve

Rogers guy already taking shots at Bell about who's got the better network speeds / channels etc.  This is gonna work out well.  :-\

''We have built one of the strongest sports companies in the world'' - Larry Tanenbaum.

Yeah, congratulations.  Meanwhile, how many championships have your teams won?  For the past 6 years, the Leafs have been one of the laughingstock NHL teams.  The Raptors can't seem to do much, Toronto FC aren't good.  Marlies have done ok I suppose.

The new ownership group will hopefully do better for the actual teams.

Move all Habs/Sens games to midnight on TV please.

Black out their games completely.  I would rather watch the Bachelor, the Bachelorette, Dancing with the Stars, Croqueting with Cathy, any show on the Woman's network, the View.

Just have every Leaf game on tv and everything will be ok.

Well, I don't know about all of you but I don't see how having a three headed corporate ownership group where no one has majority control could possible go wrong.
