Leafs re-sign Ben Scrivens

Out of curiosity, who else in the league has a similar split deal like this?

You know, there was a recent signing like this though the specifics escape me.  But being an impetuous fellow, I'm going to say that it was another goalie, Vancouver's Eddie Lack.  Let me check this but we'll see if my record of retaining useless information (while forgetting the things I shouldn't) holds steady.

*EDIT: nailed it

Cool. Thanks.

Here's a few more goalies: Riku Helenius, Thomas Greiss, Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers,  and Anton Khudobin. All are in similar positions that Scrivens is in.

And just looking at CapGeeks most recent 50 contracts, of the five players who were 26 years old or under and signed 2-year contracts, 5 of them had the same split, the 6th had a two-way deal in both years.

This could be because of the same waiver-related reasons that was brought up early though, but this type of split is fairly common for players who are on the cusp of making the NHL and want the extra security of a second year.

Interesting and most appreciated. I had no idea this was as common as it was.

Neither did I.  Added thanks.

The deal is OK.  Whether Burke will be around for Year Two is the real question.  No upgrade in goal means another playoff-free year, I fear.

Scriven to fly. Scriven the dog a bone. Scriven it up.

Good deal, not much to complain about with it that I can see.  Seems fair.

Yeah he deserved a chance and the Monster had too many chances already; so it makes sense.

What does Scrivens' contract pay him at the AHL level? I read that he made $85,000 last season but his performance should have earned him a raise.

Carlton, I'm humbled by your knowledge.  Just one of the reasons this is one of the ebst forums I've come across...

Will he seize the opportunity he's been Scriven?

*crickets*

Sorry, I couldn't help it, but Potvin really cracked me wup with "Scriven the dog a bone".

The Leafs have less than $2.5 million committed to goalies next year.  That could be a stroke of genius by Burke, or the final line of Burke's resume in Toronto.  :-\

109 games experience between them...it could work out but sadly I think it is more likely to be a disaster.

He was bumped up to $105k.

I'd have been fine with giving him half his NHL salary in the AHL as I think he earned it last year. It might be a moot point though as he'll likely be in the NHL or with another team due to his waiver status, no?

A lot of the advanced stats guys I follow on Twitter claim you shouldn't be spending much on goaltenders due to their unpredictability.  Maybe we'll come out on the right side of it for once.

I think they are going to go after Loungo once the CBA is worked out.  Probably Franson, Blacker or Holzer, Ashton and a 2nd.

I think a more judicious analysis would claim you shouldn't overspend on goalies.  You have to put up decent money to get a decent goalie (obviously).  And, when you get hold of a Lundqvist or a Brodeur, you pay them very well.  The goalie is the most important member of the team, after all.

Similar money to Ben Bishop, similar age and NHL experience.  Will be interesting to see which Ben turns out better!

Potvin correctly summarized the consensus thinking of most of the advanced stats guys.  Most would say that given the choice of signing one of the top 15 guys in the league and paying current market value for that (5-6million) or signing one of the guys in the 15-30 group, you should sign one of the guys in the 15-30 group and use the extra cash to buy better skaters.  Goalies are hard to predict and the deltas between them are getting smaller so the fact of the matter is that when you get a top 15 guy, you usually overspend relative to his improvement in team success.
