Leafs sign college UFA Casey Bailey

I seem to remember another Leaf who's name was Bailey, believe his first name was Ace. We should be so lucky to have another.

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell them stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I took the fairy to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe so I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. Give me five bees for a quarter you'd say. Now where were we, oh ya. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because if the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.

Just so I'm clear on contracts moving forward.  The Leafs came into the year with 49 contracts on board.

Traded away: Ashton, Broll, Franson, Santorelli, Winnik, Holzer, Clarkson, Jokinen, Abbott (9 out)
They took on: Panik, Leipsic, Jokinen, Sill, Brennan, Horton, Lindstrom, Erikson, Brewer (9 in)

They now signed Soshnikov and potentially Bailey.  Does that put them at 50 contracts or do Soshnikov and Bailey not count until they start playing professional hockey?

You forgot Kontiola's contract being terminated.

I was with it once! And then they changed what it was! And now what I'm with isn't it and what's it seems weird and scary to me! And it'll happen to you!

Soshnikov won't count until his contract actually kicks in. That Ashton and Broll trade looks pretty important now huh.

You've also got Lindstrom (sp?) and Brewer, and ? coming off this year too though, right?

Do those contracts come off the list as soon as the clock ticks down on the Leaf's season?  Is it July 1?  Just curious as trade-floor deals may need room for contracts coming back.

The other boys here are a way better source, but I believe they're done the last game of the season.

July 1.

CLOSE ENOUGH.

I agree.  :-X

A bit of insight from Bailey's dad on how the deal went down:

Bailey will become the first Lion to play in the NHL in school history, and playing immediately was something important to him. Glen said Casey had lengthy discussions with the Buffalo Sabres, who are owned by Terry Pegula ? Penn State alumnus and benefactor of the Division I program. But the Sabres wanted Bailey to wait to play until next season, Glen said.

?Until today, I thought he was going to Buffalo,? Glen said.

That?s when Leafs president and governor Brendan Shanahan reached out to Casey on the phone today.

?Toronto was the one that wanted to play and play as soon as they can get him up there,? Glen said.

Casey is expected to be in Toronto when the Leafs take on the Minnesota Wild on Monday. However, Glen will not be there. He is leaving for Africa for a mission trip.

Kind of weird for Buffalo to basically pass on him here. He was one of the most coveted college free agents out there, and burning a year off a contract is pretty standard practice in these instances. I mean, what did they really have to lose here? But their loss is our gain.

What's the benefit of him burning off a year of his ELC? Just more.money further down the line after this contract?

1) It lets him start playing professional hockey today instead of sitting on his bum until next year.
2) It burns a year of ELC so yeah, if he has a good year next year he might make more money
3) It's not terrible for the Leafs either because if he has a good but not great year next year, his final cap hit on his next contract might be higher but accounting for bonuses it might actually end up cheaper in terms of where you look at the top of the cap hit.

Overall it doesn't really affect the Leafs all that much though.  They aren't going to be a cap ceiling team next year (or at least shouldn't be) and he's a RFA until he turns 27 regardless of how many ELC years he has.

You forgot Kontiola's contract being terminated.

And no Jokinen.

I put him twice (added and taken away) and yeah, I did forget Kontiola.  So that puts the Leafs at 10 contracts out, 10 contracts in (with Bailey expected to debut tomorrow).

They have one more contract slot open in the event they sign another college/overage OHLer.

I would assume some cash for rest of this year might matter to him and chance to see what he has to work on in off season to be successful next year. Sort of like a free training camp.

I do believe he is also eligible for the Marlies playoffs too as clear day rosters no longer exist.  So if he shows productive performance down the stretch that could be another boon to their playoff chances. The Leafs last game is on April 11 and the Marlies will have 4 more regular season games left at that point.

Despite the fact that his name sounds suspiciously like Katy Perry, I'm open-minded enough to give this signing the benefit of the doubt.
