David Nonis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Monday the hockey club has signed forward Daniel Winnik to a one-year contract.

Winnik, 29, played 76 games for the Anaheim Ducks in 2013-14, registering career highs in assists (24) and points (30) while adding six goals, 23 penalty minutes and a plus-six rating. He also posted an assist and two penalty minutes in nine playoff games with the Ducks last season.

The 6-2, 207-pound centreman has accumulated 150 career NHL points (49 goals, 101 assists) and 226 penalty minutes in 490 games with Phoenix, Colorado, San Jose and Anaheim. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Winnik was originally selected by Phoenix in the ninth round, 265th overall, in the 2004 Entry Draft.

Was #1 on Anaheim last season in SH/TOI per game.

Well now, Winnik was a guy I'd have taken a strong look at earlier, but now? Are we planning on icing 5 forward lines?

However it shakes out, their bottom 6 is going to be MUCH better than last season.

Bodie-Kontiola-Ashton

I think Kontiola is probably more likely to make the team opening night than Frattin.  But maybe he doesn't fit a 4th line role.

The Kontiola signing is looking a little strange (or stranger right now). I suppose it's possible he wins the 2RW spot and that bumps Clarkson/Booth down a peg.

Komarov signing seems strange too.

I don't get this signing at all. Way too many forwards.

Yes, but how many are good penalty killers?  Winnik was brought in specifically to help in that area.  He led the Ducks in SH/TOI among Forwards and was pretty good in that role.  I'm not sure, apart from Komarov, if any of the other forwards signed this year were going to be big helps on the PK.

Yeah. I mean the hope is that Komarov establishes himself as a 3rd line penalty killing forward who can score 30 points or so. But that's basically what Winnik's been the last couple of seasons and we likely scooped him up for $1-1.5mil. If Komarov can still play to that level I won't hate the deal, but hopefully that will be the last time the Leafs overpay/overcommit to a bottom-6 forward.

my feeling is that Holland and Frattin aren't making this team.

I'm happy that they are addressing the bottom lines of this team. They were downright horrific last season.

I haven't looked lately... What does this do to the cap?

Lets say Winnik gets $1.5mil, and the Leafs demote Smith and Orr:

Shade over $3.5mil, but a forward will have to be waived to make room on the roster for Gardiner (or it could be Holzer and the Leafs just keep 6 D on the roster). So we're likely looking at $4mil in cap space plus a bit of wiggle room. The latest reports are the Leafs are looking at a bridge deal for Gardiner so he'll probably come in around $3mil.

In other words, they're still fine. Not a ton of room, but they can comfortably have 23 guys on the roster.

I think they still do. I think it's more likely that this means Bodie doesn't make the team. I also think it's an indication that guys like Holland, Kontiola, Frattin and Ashton aren't likely to be every day guys when everyone is healthy, and even that Clarkson could easily find himself in the press box if he doesn't perform. The team has a lot more NHL depth now than they did last season.

Also, it's not beyond painfully clear that guys like Orr and McLaren no longer have a spot on the team.
