Leafs sign Daniel Winnik

At least there's a decent mix of forwards now who can compete for bottom six roles. Most of these recent signings are 1 year contracts for not much money. Add in some Marlies who might challenge for a spot and it should be interesting to see who might stick with the team beyond next season.

I like the fact that the Leafs primarily looked to address their needs by waiting until the free agent frenzy was over and do some bargain hunting. I think we've seen that there's real value there and, really, with Ashton, Frattin and Holland in the mix only a couple of these guys need to have good years for a solid bottom 6 to come through.

Still, all of this translating into any actual success depends on how the line-up is used by Carlyle. I think they had the makings of a pretty solid bottom 6 last year too.

Only 3 of 6 under contract with the Leafs, and, possibly none will make the opening night roster.

Training camp this year should be very interesting.  Lots of competition for the roster  spots, plus Reimer'to challenge for the starter's role, etc.  This year's team so far is looking quite good, at least on paper.

If by quite good you mean less likely to be a 100% train wreck then yes!

Step 1: Have a season marked by terrible defensive play, an awful blue-line, ridiculous coaching decisions, inconsistent secondary scoring and a sub-optimal top 6.
Step 2: Improve the bottom 6 a little
Step 3: ? ? ? ? ?
Step 4: Stanley Cup!

Clarkson had better pull up his socks because he's part of this competition too.  I could see him pulling pressbox duty or stuck on the 4th line if he doesn't shape up.

This should be a viable answer in cards against humanity

That was a valiant attempt at turning yet another thread into a Clarkson beetch-fest.

Far from it, just noting that management is sending him unmistakable signals.  If people want to beat dead horses, that's their business.

Clearly the Leafs are in it to Winnik!

Boo!

This offseason reminds me of a Futurama episode when Fry had to choose between 1 $500 parrot, or 500 $1 lizards. The leafs have gone the lizard route. Good for them. I hate parrots.
