If not for Carlyle, Gardiner wouldn't have gotten this contract.

On the basis of?  Him playing him?  I haven't seen any quotes from anyone praising Carlyle on his ability to foster the talents of the young team he has in front of him.

I'd agree to that statement, kinda. If he meant Gardiner would have gotten a higher contract if not for Carlyle (ie if another coach gave him top PP time he would have scored more points).

?Randy is one of Jake?s biggest supporters,? said Nonis. ?Whenever rumours about Jake being on the trading block would pop up, Randy would come to me and say: ?You?re not really considering moving him??

?Randy thinks a lot of Jake. He does push him in certain ways that Jake had to adjust to, but it?s only because Randy knows how good Jake can be. Having Jake locked up for five years will make Randy very happy.?

As for Carlyle, Gardiner says he and the coach get along fine and that the tough love Carlyle showed should pay off.

?He is a coach that likes to push his players and get the most out of them,? Gardiner said. ?I think that was what he was doing with me.

?I have a lot more potential than what I?ve been doing. I think (Carlyle?s approach was) good for me. It will help me down the road.?

Gardiner said the team offered him two contracts: A shorter deal to bridge him closer to free agency and the five-year deal he opted for.

It was his choice.

?I am happy to be a Leaf for a really long time,? said Gardiner. ?That was a big part of it . . . commitment. I thought having five years and the money was awesome. The security for me was good. It just shows the leafs have a lot of faith in me.?

Ahem...

Hope this means the Leafs have made their decision and Gardiner outlasts Carlyle

His new contract means Gardiner has even higher value on the trade front.  Yes?  No?

Fair enough...although I would love to see those quotes outside of a direct discussion on his extension.  I mean Nonis is pretty much obligated to praise Carlyle given that they kept him.  And it's really not in Gardiner's best interest to be anti-Carlyle in the media right now...at least until he gets fired.  But I will concede that you provided exactly what I questioned.  Well done.

Perhaps one say that Gardiner was just trying to be diplomatic in both his answers and approach to the subject matter.

Either way, he's here to stay.

As for Carlyle,  who knows what lurks in his future with the organization.
