Leafs sign LHD Teemu Kivihalme to one year ELC

https://twitter.com/MapleLeafs/status/1125792537355214849

Former Nashville pick in 2013, 5th round.

Interesting on this guy. He was born in the US, went to high school and college in the US.  He was at the Bruins prospect development camp this year.

Hope Dubas is finding diamonds in the rough.

I have said it for a while now, the Marlies have so many more NHL ready players than just 4 years ago.  But they still have a few journeymen on the squad, why not have a whole team of contenders rather than play guys who won't make it back to the bigs.  Jooris, Greening, Clune, Lo Verde, etc.

From the little I've read it doesn't sound like he's as NHL-ready as Mikheyev might be. I don't really see him jumping ahead of Rosen or Borgman or Sandin at LD, so hopefully he's ready to start at the AHL level and go from there.

Even though the AHL is a development league, they're still trying to win and the chances of doing that with a team full of kids/prospects only is probably next to impossible. Losing and learning only goes so far and does no one any good. Look at the Hainsey, Marleau influence on the Leafs. It's been huge for the development of these kids and even though we hate Marleau's cap hit next year, what he brought to the kids was well worth it.
Back to the Marlies...They've had 57(21 rookies) players play at least 1 game for them this season, 25(8 rookies) in the post season.

He's destined for the Marlies unless he goes off the charts at training camp. The Marlies could be losing 2 or 3 for their top 3 D in the fall and there are others that probably won't be back.

The prospects coming through our system talk about this a lot. They appreciate having the veteran presence on the team shepherding their development, showing them the ropes without outright competing with them for Leaf attention. Kaskisuo made huge strides once Hutchinson came into the fold. Bracco rooms with Clune who is essentially everyone's personal trainer too.

Meh, another defencemen in the system without ideal dman size.  Nothing to get  excited about.

Im sure youre not excited about Sandin, Liljegren, Daszuk Hollowell either because of their lack of ideal dman size. Who knows how this will turn out. Didnt cost the Leafs anything. Size, has nothing to do with playing ability.

Agreed that size isn't everything.  However, would love to have some Colton Parayko or Brandon Carlo type players to supplement our smaller puck movers.  Look at the Blues dmen who probably average 6ft 3 or 4 and can all skate well.... don't underestimate the effectiveness of a long reach and wingspan when it comes to defending and mitigating scoring chances, especially when it comes to the PK and taking away passing and shooting lanes.

Why post stuff we can not read unless we buy a subscription.

I believe The Athletic offers a couple "free" articles you can read before you have to subscribe if you download the app.

You can read the first paragraph, and also try the free trial.  There's plenty of Leafs (and all other teams) content on there. It's actually so much that I can't keep up with it all unless I quit my job. Hmmm....
