Leafs sign Mike Santorelli

Another good point.  I prefer to watch that kind of play rather than bruiserhockey.  Although one could argue that LAK leaned more toward the latter than the former.

Well, it's not like the Leafs didn't bring in some guys who throw the body around, either. It's just that they're now able to skate well enough to do so in the offensive end. I expect the team's forechecking - and, subsequently, their puck recovery - will be better this season.

What I like about the moves the Leafs have made this off-season is that that they've mostly focused on guys that skate well. Definitely seems like they've at least acknowledged how important it is for everyone in the lineup to have good mobility, and that poor skaters need to be excised (hence buying out Gleason, offering up Franson's rights for Gorges, etc).

I think that's a misconception, or maybe misrepresentation, because that team could skate with anyone IMO.

Not saying they are plugs, but the Rangers were better skaters.  Anyhoo.

Great signing! I think others have stated what I could, so I won't repeat. Definitely lots of moving parts and skating ability.

I also think it's a good idea to lock in Gardiner for long term, as opposed to the bridge deal. If the money gets too out of control, there is flexibility there.

Santorelli also got some time on the PK last year, 1:43 per game with a man down.

Looks like he, Bozak, Komarov, and JVR will be our primary-4 penalty killers. Wouldn't mind seeing Frattin, Ashton, and Holland get looks there to give them some minutes. They're not known for their defence but they're all young guys who can hustle.

I really like the two deals today - low risk, short term and they're almost certainly upgrades over what the team trotted out in their bottom 6 (assuming they end up as 3 C/W) the majority of last season.

Well, it certainly seems like Nonis and co. learned their lessons about big deals to free agents. Let's hope it keeps up.

True, but the second wedding is almost always cheaper.

love the signing. He will bring the heart and soul to the locker room and on the ice. Also nice and cheap...

All these 3rd and 4th line guys fill me with hope that Carlyle will actually utilize a 4th line this year.  8-10 minutes a game for the 4th line would be nice, especially if it's filled with guys that can actually skate.  Seems to me like the Leafs are finally going in this direction.

Agreed Zee. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Anyone know the cap situation when putting guys in the minors?  I remember something about cap relief up to $900k or something, so if the Leafs bury both Orr and McLaren does this mean no affect on the cap?  Orr is at $925k and McLaren at $800k

It's up to $925k, so yeah if they go down they won't count against the cap at all.

On one hand I want them demoted so Carlyle doesn't play them but on the other had I don't want them taking a roster spot in the AHL either.
